The front and rear LSDs on the GR Corolla seal it for me - that'll be the most fun to drive.
If it's too cramped in the back I'd probably be ok with a Type R. My kids need to be able to at least sit in the back for pickup at school etc.
The GR Corolla leaked site is now down, if anyone missed it, I screencaptured it here:

our Ascent with the same engine has never seen over 20 mpg. Subaru has no clue with engines these days.
We had a rental CX9 which felt just as quick and we saw 28 mpg on the highway.
We are done with Subaru, the Ascent is the most annoying car we've ever owned with all the safety crap.
It's not surprising, there's just not that many out there, and their numbers will just keep dropping. If you want a normally aspirated 6mT sport compact you have few choices these days.
Jalopnik review is great, and fantastic photos. Hate when they can't even bother do take their own pictures (Autoblog), did they really drive the car?
Based on the reviews and photos, I think I'd be happy with an 11th gen Si. But I'm aiming for a Type R this time, or GR Corolla, if either is...
Glad Honda makes summer tires available to car reviewers. Wish they existed in real life. When I was shopping for my 2020 I saw like 40 cars and zero had the summer tire option.
I paid $24k for my Si a year ago, and now it's worth $27k w/ 25k miles. Something is wrong with that too.
Everyone has to adjust to the new reality of inflation. Honda is smart - this is the perfect time to pass on their increased costs to customers, cause everything is expensive right now.
I loved my Sport hatch but can't go back to an open diff - more power just means more wheel spin, especially in the winter on snow tires and dry pavement.
No LEDs, crappy base stereo w/ ancient 6.5” screen, no moonroof, no keyless, no auto headlights, no EYesight, ugly 17” wheels. Oh, and terrible manual shifter.
To me it comes down to how's the car to drive, cause the regular Corolla is a borefest. If this is half as good to drive as the GR4, I'll give it a look. It's probably going to be $5k less than the Type R.
Yeah, all reports say it's the 3 cylinder turbo, 6mT and AWD system (70/30 rear/front split!) from the GR4. Lot of reports it'll be tuned higher for the Corolla, it's 257 hp in the GR4.
Take the Subaru Winter Driving Experience, you'll be fine. I drove a 330i ZHP through 10 Massachusetts winters, RWD is awesome, but you need an LSD, that car had an open diff.
GR Corolla in late 2022? Should be 6mT AWD 250 hp turbo, since it's supposed to use the GR4 drivetrain.
I'll give it a serious look if it's most fun to drive in class. Don't love the hatch styling, the sloping trunk ruins the trunk space and the look imo. But if it's as insiders claim, it'll...
