With the results from our first baseline of our new FL5 Civic Type R, we decided to take the Type R back to our dyno to gather more data. We rose the octane to 93 octane and gathered the Air Fuel Ratio in stock form. Take a look at the dyno plots below or watch our latest YouTube video.

Below is the video link:

@Hondata, thanks for the info.

How different are the air fuel ratios between the factory wideband sensor ECU data and the tailpipe sniffer?

Have you guys tested a 3 gallons of E85 to bump up the octane? E85 is way more affordable than race gas and should be fine since the car runs in full time AF closed loop.

have a question, doesn't VP racing 101 have 101 AKI? According to VP racing site, it stated that it's 106 RON/ 96.6 MON, anyway it doesn't looks like huge difference. I kinda remember someone in Swindon plant used to said FK8 will remap to 320PS(mfg stated) map if you put 98 RON in it, so first though fl5 will go even higher since it got 327 HP @ acn 91 at first place

just to clarify. the ecu doesn't know how to map switch. it's detecting knock and pulling ignition timing when you run less than 93 octane.

you can still find more power on 91, but you need access to the ECU (Hondata solution) in order to adjust the fuel/boost/ignition tables. for example, stock tune runs pretty lean air/fuel so it's more prone to knocking. you can add more fuel to reduce knocking.

yes thanks it makes sense, MB probably get the wrong concept

So Iā€™m not familiar with how Hondata measures HP but Iā€™m assuming this is crank HP?

He mentions in the video it's a dyno correction. Helps them compare dyno numbers from vehicle to vehicle. They don't mean anything for someone on the outside. The important thing is to look at the delta of the curves.

Ok has anyone got actual HP numbers on the car that you know of?

So my only take away from the video is that it makes About a 3% bump in hp on 93 vs 91 but not anymore on 95.šŸ˜¬

Correct. Itā€™s on factory tune. Itā€™s not making anymore power because itā€™s not tuned for higher than 93.

My point is the graphs are showing 340HP and 374lbs. That is an arbitrary number? Or is that crank or wheel? Itā€™s got to represent something!

It would be neither crank nor wheel; it would be at the hubs. Correction factors are also at play.

On the Si the stock Honda tune will not increase timing with higher octane, it will reduce timing on lower octane if knock is detected. The FL5 tuning is going to be different but along the same lines in general.

Itā€™s probably still a Bosch ECU but updated. Will have to wait for Hondata to jailbreak it. Most likely similar tuning strategy where most tables are based on air charge/requested torque and the ecu figures out the appropriate boost and timing.

Some dude here in Puerto Rico took his FL5 to the Dyno immediately šŸ™†šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø. 307whp and 328tq
