Done some research trying to figure this out. At low speeds it acts like a train, using the engine to create electricity whcih powers the motor which powers the car. But at high speed the engine eventually directly drives the front wheels. To me this is a 1:1 type thing. Well if I floor it at high speed, I wouldn't expect the RPM to just stay the same like it was a manual transmission that I left in the same gear while flooring it.. Can someone give me the full details on how this marvel works?

Thanks

Did more research. Interesting really. The engine constantly turns a generator. Whether or not it uses the power from it is based on battery charge, electric motor demand, etc etc. Just like a locomotive. Welllll the engine is tied to an overdrive ratio....so on a normal car when you go into the highest gear, that is the same ratio as this when its in direct drive mode. So based on the load/speed, if it can go into "overdrive gear", it simply engages a clutch and that bypasses the electric motor and it goes straight into direct engine mode.

Now if you floor it.....the rpms need to go up, it can't in direct engine mode, so it goes back to using the electric motor and generator to give you the power which should only ever be what the electric motor is rated at. So idk where they get 200hp when nothing is rated at that.

Interesting vids that explain it all.
