I Haven't posted any updates in a while on my car or our development with COBB Tuning software, but in the past month or so we have made some very big strides and have raised the barriers for what can be done with the software.

This is probably TLDR for most of you, but if you are interested in Cobb software or using the Cobb Accessport on your Type R, its probably worth a read.

I know that Cobb is not the most popular platform for tuning these cars, but I've got to give it to Cobb, They have been working very hard on their Accesstuner software for these cars in the past couple of months and I have been working with them directly with my personal FL5 to add/ change tables and to find and raise many limits set in the ECU. As a side note, they are working very hard on hard parts and flex fuel for these cars as well.

The software has only been out a few months, but its already twice as capable as it was on release. We went from having power limiting problems even while on the stock turbo and ethanol, up to now making near 500whp with an upgraded turbo and fuel system. To begin with, one couldn't run an upgraded fuel system. Now we have worked with XDI and have figured out what is needed to run XDI injectors and an XDI pump using Cobb software.

The mod list is as follows:
-Cobb Accessport V3 with JST Custom Tuning
-PRL HVI, PRL FMIC
-RV6 R660 Turbo and Downpipe
-XDI high flow injectors and XDI EVO fuel pump, stock fuel line
-Stock front pipe, turbo inlet, and catback exhaust.
-E40 Ethanol fuel blend

I installed this turbo on my car about 2 months ago and initially I wasn't very impressed overall with it compared to stock turbo/ ethanol blend. However after working with Cobb to unlock many new tables and higher rev limits, I am 100% happy with it, and I think its a great turbo option for pretty much any need.
Initially the car only made about 420 whp, but was very laggy. I think at this point the car was faster on ethanol and the stock turbo. We weren't seeing peak boost until 5000rpms or so, and had to use the stock redline, so we had a very narrow powerband. Now the car hits peak boost well under 4000 rpms and we are running a 7400 rpm rev limiter. It seems we have no limits keeping this turbo from spooling at its best anymore!

My goal was to break 500whp on this setup, but we couldn't quite get there as we are currently limited on fuel. My car has an upgraded XDI fuel system, however I did not do the "line mod" so my total fuel flow is being limited by roughly 10% or so. I plan to pull the line back off and drill it, and install an RV6 front pipe that I already have as soon as I get a chance. This 490 WHP was made at only 25lbs of boost. With more fuel flow, we should be able to add a couple more PSI and hopefully see 500-520whp on this setup.

If you have considered using Cobb for your FL5 or DE5, there now is more reason to do so. As of September or October Cobb was really only good for nearly stock or mild bolt on cars. My car is proving that you can make plenty of power reliably using the Accessport and a custom tune from us at JST Performance.

If you to check out our Custom Tuning and Acccessport options, you can do that on our website at the link below. Also feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Good morning JST Performance! I have been following your post for the last couple of months. I was a big fan of Cobb for previous projects, and the current offering seems to be getting better every month. Now that your team has moved onto larger injectors and pumps, I see this a good option for my use case.

In my experience, the Cobb OTS tunes have left a lot to be desired and I’ve always ended up going to an E tune quickly. From the results I’ve seen I think the Hondata will do the same.

Would you be able to show a graph of big turbo e40 tuned vs Stock turbo E40 tuned?

Hey Chris! If youd like to discuss further, shoot me an email and ill be happy to help!

yes the Cobb OTS Tunes are very conservative on these cars. On our stock FL5 we only saw about a 20-25whp increase vs the stock tune. With just our custom tuning, we were seeing 60-70 HP gains over stock while still keeping everything safe.

I can only do Dyno overlays while on my Dyno computer at my shop ( which i'm not at right now), but I do have the E40 chart. The car made just over 400whp on E40 on the stock turbo.
