Missed a shift yesterday, no idea how but I did.

3rd to 4th, accidentally went 2nd around 72mph. Car didn’t throw a CEL, no smoke, bangs or grinds. Just immediately hit neutral and dropped into 4th.

Have driven over 100miles since the incident and car drives fine. Pulls fine, shifts fine, again no CEL.

Pulled codes today, have the P0219. Which is expected. Now my question is, this “knock”

It sounds similar to other posts and people say it’s normal. Idk. I’ve attached two videos, one in car and one outside. Wanted opinions on the noise of the motor.

Might go get a compression/leak down next week. Idk, I’m pretty fucking bummed and feel like an idiot. Less than 2k miles on the car

That ticks louder then my car with hpfp and injectors. Wouldn't hurt to swing by the local Honda shop.

Which video makes you say that? Inside or out?

There’s a thread on the inside noise and mine sounds exactly like that. Can only hear it on a warm start. Cold you don’t hear anything

Tick would be injectors though right? Not rod knock? Doesn’t help that these motors are unbalanced and loud as hell normally

I've only heard severe knock on a motor that blew up. So not much help there. I'd still bring it by the honda shop and have them check it out.

Update:

Been driving it all night. Boosts fine, pulls hard all the through power band, again no CEL, and the knocking noise is something I’ve seen all over.

Starting to think I’m fine. I’ll likely have a compression test done when the oil gets changed.

Definitely can hear something that does not sound normal, you can barely make it out over the injectors and fuel pump in the 1st video, but can hear it in your 2nd video. Going to 2nd at 72mph is very concerning. You'll definitely want to take it in asap just in case. Just hope the oil doesn't look like some kindergartener's art project lol

I thought the knock in the second video was bad too but check out the link to the other thread I posted.

It’s the same sound. I’ve also seen it on FK8s and there are a few other threads about it.

Here’s the FK8 making the same noise. It’s interesting because they’re all at the same RPM and roughly same tempo/speed.

The post I linked also says the guy tried two other FL5s and got the same thing, same RPM.

I did hear the other link too. Very similar sounds, but something about yours stands out a little bit more. Hopefully its nothing. 🤞

Inside video. You can hear knocking versus the regular injector tick.

72 mph is around 7800 rpm in 2nd, which doesn't sound terrible to me. For example, 70's VW Rabbit engines could rev to 8000 vs a 6750 redline.
A new engine has a fair amount of over-rev margin. Older engines may float the valves due to spring fatique.. Repeated over-rev might fatigue the crank-shaft, but unlikely in a single event.

Funny youd mention VWs lol I was thinking today about the time I did this exact same thing in my MKIV GTI. It was my first manual car and I was at the top of third and hit second(seems to be a trend) Car was fine lol

I know valve float can occur at higher RPM on the Type R, can’t remember what RPM, but after driving close to 150miles between yesterday and today, I can’t find anything out of the ordinary.

Pulls hard all through the revs, no weird noises, no rough idle, etc.
