Looks like insulation to prevent intake air from being warmed up by the hot air around the turbocharger and exiting from the hood vent.

Joe Raiti will need to tell us how many hot pockets can fit in there when he does the full review.
JR: It has enough room to fit several of your favorite strawberry hot pockets so you can wash it down with your big-gulp Diet Coke. I’m gonna have to zonk the back seat leg room. I’m 6-ft tall. As I’m seated at the back, it has too much leg room. You can put a dining table in there. So much waste….

Do you guys think it could be an aesthetically-pleasing intake cover of some sort to keep debris out, due to the new location of the hood scoop?

any update in this? Regarding the air vent on the hood, there is an air diverter below it that points to the DP, same as my Renault 19 Sport in the 90's but the air was diverter to engine.

There has to be a serviceable part within that box, they would not use those bolts for a decorative plate. They could have used rivets or adhesive if it was not meant to be opened, those bolts were meant to be opened and closed if needed for some reason. They are a pretty good sized bolt, so they will hold some decent torque, too much for something decorative. That plate will likely have a seal on it , hence the bolts being used to keep the seal tight. What it is I dunno, but it is an active serviceable part for sure.
There is no serviceable part inside.. it’s just a casted pipe with a cover plate.

Does that mean the plastic cover can be replaced with something else, like titanium? Or, would it be smart to keep the plastic to reduce temps?

Prl and other company’s make milled aluminum finned plates to reduce heat radiating off the turbo. Since the turbo is literally right under the inlet piping it stores more heat naturally.
