Took a rock to windshield. Insurance is covering it but when safelite called me today, they said they the FL5 uses different glass than other civics. The cost of the windshield is $1900!!??

I requested OEM glass and they said it wouldn’t matter because they don’t carry a generic for the Type R.

Anyone know what’s so special about the glass in the type R?

Interestingly enough, they are correct.

From Honda's dream shop:

Regular Civic: P/N 73111-T20-A41, $794.80
Type R: P/N 73111-T60-305, $1896.85

The description is the same for both (GLASS SET, FR. WINDSHIELD (GREEN)(FUYAO)), and the parts diagrams shows no visual differences.

I wonder if it’s the “Type R tax”. If both cars are based on the same chassis, I can’t imagine the glass is any different. It certainly isnt any more resistant to rock chips turning into 10 inch cracks…

Given the civic is still a civic, I doubt it’s the sound deadening glass used in higher end cars and since it doesn’t have a HUD, it doesn’t need to support that. I wonder if the part number with the DE5, which has a HUD, is cross compatible or same price.

My insurance agent is a buddy of mine and says that’s the same price as high end Mercedes OEM replacement glass costs.

The people at safelite said when they saw the price , they had to google a Type R to find out what Honda car had such an insane price.

They also said the price for the rear glass is even more insane. I didn’t ask though… but now I’m curious. @rui can you look that up?

Regular Civic Hatchback:
GLASS SET, RR. WINDSHIELD (GREEN)(AGC)
Part Number: 73211-T47-A01
MSRP : $732.81

Type R:
GLASS SET, RR. WINDSHIELD (GREEN)(AGC)
Part Number: 73211-T43-K02
MSRP : $2583.43

Had to replace the windshield on my DE5 a couple of weeks ago.

Got quoted 3500 $ from my Acura dealer, with calibration.

Went to a small shop near me and paid 1065 $ for the windshield with calibration. Same brand as OE.

Only problem I'm having is that the HUD is now blurry, so I stopped using it...

Also keep in mind that I'm in Canada and prices are probably higher here than in the US.

Sounds like you need to take it back for them to fix the HUD. I'm certain they'll tell you they did everything properly and you have to take it to Acura.

This happened to me at 250miles on the odometer. Do not go through Safelite. They are just grabbing at free money. They told me that if I wanted OEM glass, I would have to pay extra $300-500. I asked why my glass coverage doesn’t cover it fully. Long story short, I spent at least 3 hrs with both Progressive and Safelite. No one could tell me why I need to pay extra for OEM glass for a pretty close to new car. The glass coverage verbiage is very gray. Leaving companies like Safelite to exploit.

I contacted the dealership where I bought the car from and asked who does their glass work. They referred me to a local shop. They traveled to my place, put in the windshield. Later on in the day, another guy showed up to do the laser/camera calibrations. They didn’t charge me anything additional for OEM glass. It was covered by my insurance.

I tipped the 3 guys that did the work. That’s money I would gladly spend than to give money to Safelite which has a monopoly over glass repair.

I have zero deductible glass coverage. It won’t cost me a dime to replace this. Safelite is who my insurance makes it “easy” to use and it’s convenient. My insurance already approved OEM glass.

So what’s the issue?

Seems OP simply wants to understand why the Type R windshield is so expensive and if there's anything special about it. An $1,850 delta over a standard Civic windshield is absurd.

It’s all behind the scenes. If the insurance company is willing to pay for it, we will never know why. This is likely the same reason why our insurance premiums continue to rise.

A friend of mine told me he recently had a kid on a scooter slam into his rear side door of his Tesla. The door needed to be replaced along with the window plastic panel. The insurance paid out close to $10k for the repair. As long as shops increase their estimates and insurance companies accept it, we just get passed along the delta. I don’t see the insurance company asking why there is the delta and passing along the information to us.

I'm referring to Post #6 above.
