  1. CIVICXI *NOVICE* Track Thread!

I'll add something to this as well. Car Control I think it's always good to practice car control outside of a track first if you are new. The most approachable way to do this is to attend a few autocrosses (test and tune, locals, or schools are all options) - the risk is lower (although not...
  2. CIVICXI *NOVICE* Track Thread!

Every once in awhile you get a novice who watched Max Verstappen a few times and shows up in the novice class with something like a ZL1 1LE for my first track day, but generally I'd agree - intermediate can be the wild west - always approach with caution. It's a group of people who think they...
  3. CIVICXI *NOVICE* Track Thread!

I don't always buy track insurance for HPDEs, but I always do for TT, and sometimes for HPDEs depending on the track / length of the event. You can always control yourself, but you can't control what other people do, and you also can't always control what might fail on your car at speed. From...

Yep - I run the 18x11 ET44 5x120 72.6mm bore ARC-8s - they aren't listed as an FL5 fitment (although Apex lists some of their forged ones in the same spec), but they work great (and they are a lot cheaper). Black Friday is approaching!
  5. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

Off-the-shelf Apex wheels make it pretty easy - didn't rub on stock suspension with pins pulled (although I didn't have a chance to track it that way), or with camber plates / lowering springs (which has been tracked several times). :)
  6. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

I'm just trying to blow all those 18x9.5 TE37 owners' minds... ? Honestly I don't think I need to go much wider - I'm class limited to 285 and it looks pretty good on the 18x11.
  7. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

I actually think I could probably get 18x11.5s based on how much room my 11's have, but it would have to be custom and it would be close to the strut ears at full lock. 12's might work once I'm on coils with more camber? ?
  8. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

    Wider Apex wheels! ?
  9. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

I agree completely on this point - I started out with autocross and even though I don't really do it competitively anymore I still usually take a new car to a local first just to see if it has any unusual behavior before going out on track. A skid pad or even a skid car is such a great learning...
  10. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

Yep, if you can find videos like that it can be quite helpful for sure! That's what I was getting at as well.
  11. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

Absolutely! I'm always willing to help and honestly it seems like everyone in the track community is the same. It would be much better to post here than asking some random trolls in the FB group who just drive some back road from time to time.
  12. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

Having a good setup definitely helps - for me, if I didn't have VR it would be pretty useless, but with VR it really helps figure out where you need to be looking and it makes you feel like you are actually on the track. It's a good learning experience to find the blind corner you didn't know...
  13. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

Yes, that's a good point - in the context you proposed for someone who is completely new (who wouldn't be able to figure out the line by themselves) it could certainly be helpful (especially if you can find a video from a pro who walks through the track corner by corner, although that could be...
  14. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

Personally I don't do this much, as unless someone who has been there that I personally trust it can be a good way to learn the wrong line - there are a lot of bad drivers with bad videos out there. I find running the track in Assetto Corsa (or similar) in VR is far more effective for me - I...

Oh I'm aware ??? - I keep changing cars/classes, and one of the nicer magnetics I had flew off my old car at Barber earlier this year, so I've been on the tape poverty train for awhile. Next year if I run the events I plan to I'll just use the fancy Gridlife panel sticker. :)
  16. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

Thanks! Tradd did a great job with the event photos as always.
  17. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

Thanks! I was reading back through this thread and saw others mention it as well - good to know nothing's wrong with my car lol (at least not because of this). I'm surprised more people don't talk about this including the reviewers, I thought there was an actual issue the first time it popped on.
  18. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

Just curious, does anyone else get the "Brake System" light to pop on intermittently on track? In searching around it sounds like others do (hence my quote of this post), but what is actually triggering it? I see some people claim it's a temp warning - is this correct? Is there actually a...
  19. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

Modern cars are very safe, although not necessarily designed for track speeds admittedly. I think there's more of a valid point there though when you think of cars from the late 80s/early 90s that you still see on track a lot (Miatae especially come to mind), compounded with what you are...
  20. *The FL5 Track Junkie Thread*

+1 for the Hybrid S - I've been using it for a few years now and won't go back to even a regular HANS unless it's necessary for a specific setup - the Hybrid S to me is far more secure. I've had a regular HANS slide out from under the belts in a 6-pt/racing seat during endurance racing which is...
