Boost Pressure after intake install

Hey everyone!

I was curious if boost Pressure should change much after installing an intake on these cars. I have the PRL HVI and I noticed that my max boost is 2-3 psi higher with the HVI than with the OEM intake and filter. I've verified this by swapping between the intakes and the difference is consistent and repeatable.

Is this normal? I was under the assumption that lower boost is better as that means the car is hitting the ECUs torque targets easier. Or maybe the OEM intake is more restrictive which in turn is limiting max boost pressure?

Interested in everyone's thoughts!

Not sure about your point, but the boost is generated after the air pass the turbo, you are not supposed to feel any boost in the intake.

Hmmm, this is not normal. Few questions first:

1. Is your ECU unlocked/tuned or stock?

2. Did you touch any of the charge pipes/ hose clamps during the intake install?

Boost levels are usually controlled by the ECU. Intake alone does nothing without a tune to support it.

In some cases you may see even slightly LESS boost after an intake install on a stock tune bc the ECU will actively work to negate any actual gains by opening the waste gate early, pulling boost to maintain stock torque targets.

If your ECU is unlocked/tuned then torque tables might allow for higher boost levels after you install an intake.

The ECU is stock and I've never touched any of the charge pipes/clamps. I noticed this behavior with both the PRL HVI and the AFE cold air intake. They both make 2-3 more psi peak than the OEM intake.

Someone on the DE5 forum posted about that as well here. I don't think there was anything definitive that came out of that convo tho.
The one useful statement I saw in that thread was RE: air intake temps. I'm assuming you tried as best you could to keep environmental variables controlled when comparing boost levels on the different intakes?

Have you tried capturing a log on LogR yet so you can see all the other vitals during a WOT pull?

I am also assuming you were in the same gear for all pulls?

What I was doing is leaving the torque app running while driving for around 30 minutes and then look at the max boost for the drive.

Obviously temperatures would vary week to week but the aftermarket intakes always had a higher peak boost. Regardless of temperature or gear.
