Took my FL5 to VIR this weekend. Car was very capable on track. I decided to use Log R and while it’s not well documented I did manage to figure it all out with video capture.

Now this is where it gets weird. I noticed my lap time as indicated in the car app and the mobile app were the same but the timer overlap is not. Check out this video of my out lap. When I cross the starting point, the timer starts and the upper right shows that lap was 2:31. This matches the logs from the car as well. The approx length of the video also matches the on screen timer of 2:33.8. So I don’t know if I ran a 2:31 or a 2:33.8.

Anyone else seen this?

Update: must be something with day 1 logs. When I loaded the video clips from day 2, the timing is perfect. So. Weird.

Remember, the times are 'good' but they are not very 'precise'. Most smart phones update GPS at 1Hz with an accuracy of 2 meters. 2 meters is not much of an issue, but 1 Hz is. That's one update pers second (so as much as a 2 second lap error). At 100mph, that's 146 feet between measurements.

Some phones do 5Hz or even 10Hz. Much better, but still enough error to be aware of it.

I don't think that 1:31 is supposed to be that specific lap. It could be your best time of the day possibly? Note that it doesn't update when you finish your lap. It stays the same before your lap and after.

No it’s that lap. If you watch the full video, the minute the timer starts it shows you the lap time for that lap. This confirmed with my day 2 footage where the times do align.

The data log is done via the GPS on the car not the app. The phone is only used to record video. Then you download the logs from the cloud after you upload them from the car to the cloud. Then the phone reads the log and overlays it with the video.

My phone is a iPhone 15 pro. I’d have to look up the freq specs but I think it’s one of the dual frequency phones.

That's very interesting. Maybe it's a software bug in the app then.

LogR is great and sucks at the same time.

i use a QStar 10hz GPS receiver along with TrackAddict, others people like Circuit Storm. But LogR takes a log time to get the videos made, and seems off in the inputs last time i tried on my '23. not sure if there are any updates.

Never heard of Circuit Storm. I've used Track Addict and Harry's Laptimer in my other car with a BT OBD2 connector for some car telemetry. I haven't checked to see what is exposed but it's nice to have G's and steering angle along with brake and acclerator position.

Def takes a while for it to make the video file with the overlay for export but the time estimation is also wrong. It told me 2 hours and it took maybe an hour for a 30 min session but what SUCKS is you can't do anything on your phone during that time. If you open another app, it kills the process. I also don't like that on the iPhone (at least) you can't do more than 720p video when the phone supports 4k video. It was cool to try and i still might use it for data acquisition going forward but probably not for video + data.

I asked if we could export the data and they were like nope. Would have been great to use something else for the timing, and integrate with the data from LogR

you mean export the data from the app (car or mobile device)?

Im traveling for work so Im not near my car but the app says you can export data to USB. Go to the FAQ inside the Log R app (im on iphone). It says "the in-vehicle app can export data to a USB memory". Plan to see if i can figure that out since the documentation...well..sucks.

Make sure you turn off automatic crash detection when on track. If an ambulance shows up because your phone dialed 911 because it thought you got in a car crash, it will cost you thousands of dollars and the track/event operators will be pissed.

you can, but it's not in a readable format to use elsewhere
