If I was looking at a K20C1 in a salvage yard, how could I tell if it originated from an FK8 or FL5? Does Honda distinguish a version number or revision number or something somehow since they do have different hardware (inlet pipe, turbo, etc)? Is there a serial number break?

Interesting question. A serial number transition point would probably be the most reliable way of determining engine revision that I can think of unless there's some date code somewhere, as the ancillary long block parts can all be somewhat easily swapped. There's at least one FK8 owner who has swapped over the FL5 inlet pipe with the black box on top. Turbos seem to be interchangeable.

At least the ITS variant K20C8 is a dead giveaway, despite it being more or less identical to the FL5.

I believe the FL5/DE5 have different ignitions coils. Plus the magical Type R induction box

The pistons are also different on FL5 / DE5 (compared to FK8, in addition to Turbo).

now that is news to me. Got any part numbers ? IIRC it’s the same engine but tuned for 93 instead of 91

Assuming the FL5/DE5 might need to run leaner than the FK8 to meet emissions req.s?

I think the block and internals are identical. The part numbers are probably changed due to supplier changes / market.
