One other had this issue and started a thread a while ago. I always go into third to clear the syncros when i first start the car and it goes into 1st smooth after that. It will lock out 1st naturally at about 8-10mph or at least force you to be slow and deliberate which is normal.

Ive also heard that a fix could be a transmission oil swap, something about another brand that they've used on past 6MT's. I dont know if that would help the locking out of first, do you have any knowledge on that?

And you’re the guy that keeps posting. The reasons for difficulty in 1st have been noted ad nauseam. Your other BS thread describes something much more sinister and isolated. If you are really concerned, stop posting and take it to a dealer.

um what other thread? if you look on my profile i have one and only one. and brother i am 16 years old maybe im too lazy to take it into a dealer, mainly because of the fact that i'm just bored as hell in class and have nothing else to do so i decide to ask people that might know more than me or have expierienced the same thing. I'm not sure why your acting like a child on a car forum? Thank you for the initial help, but grow up.

i have same problem, dead stop at light. I'll be sitting in neutral 3 mins or so, then when u put clutch in ALL THE WAY. I throw it over to the left a tad and when i go up into first it stops halfway i can throw it back in neutral that doesnt help.
only thing ive found to combat it is, keep trying lol

Have you tried putting it into third first, then neutral, clutch out, clutch in, and finally into first gear? It could potentially help. It does for reverse.

I think every manual vehicle I have ever owned has exhibited this temporary “lockout” to some degree. The way it was explained to me (pardon me if this is not completely accurate) is that the gears may sometimes need to be jogged a little so the teeth align. This is especially evident in new transmissions. Better trans fluid can definitely help get the gears to engage smoothly.

Now, if/when I experience it, it is reactionary to just keep my foot all the way on the clutch (without letting up), shift down to 2nd, then back into 1st and go. Or if I have trouble putting it in third, I shift to 4th then back up to 3rd. This has worked for me every time that I can remember. It may sometimes take a couple of tries, but the problem is resolved in seconds not minutes. It very seldomly happens in my FL5, but did happen once this past weekend while I was out for a drive. Prior to this, I don’t recall the last time it happened…maybe never?

Agreed with TypeRD, this has happened to me maybe 3 or 4 times in 5k miles. Synchros in unlucky alignment means they won't do their job and let you engage first gear.

If you're locked out of first, shift to second, then to first. Has worked every time for me.

It seems to happen more frequently for me going into reverse. So now, I always go to third then reverse. I don't lift clutch in neutral between, just straight between the gears has worked well for me.

Changing my transmission fluid to the ACDelco Syncromesh helped my shifting all the way around.

ive learned that putting it into third or reverse helps it because i would go into second and try it again but still wouldnt work. it just took a bit of playing around with.
