For the past 3 years, I drove a 2019 Honda Civic Si Coupe that I put many modifications in. (Hybrid Racing short shifter, RV6 Type R retrofit clutch and flywheel, Acuity pedal relocator and shifter cable bushing, Greddy DDR catback, D2 lowering springs, PRL Cobra cold air intake, Type R rear motor mount, and many other misc. visual mods.) Nothing crazy, but enough to really enjoy on a daily basis.

I absolutely adored this car and it's never left me stranded. It was quick, handled well, and was practical enough for someone who mostly drove around alone. As an enthusiast, the manual transmission was a huge draw for this car as well. It was the car I dreamed of owning since I saw the prototype displayed at the Detroit Autoshow in 2017.

This year, combined with many stars lining up at the right time, I ended up trading in my Si for a 2026 Civic Sport Touring Hybrid Hatchback (a mouthful yes, so I will just refer to it as the FL4). I also got married a few months back, so I also wanted to consider my wife's needs and comforts as well.

While it's not as sleek as a coupe and essentially an automatic (I tried to teach my wife manual but she really struggled and really didn't want to), it still really appealed to me for a few reasons:

1) It's really fun to drive. The Two Motor Hybrid (e:HEV) system in the FL4 is very interesting from an engineering standpoint and in my opinion, an amazing enthusiast drivetrain from a FHEV standpoint. As many of us already probably know, it makes as much power as the Civic Si while making more torque, so it's really quick. While it's missing the LSD and variable ratio steering from the Si, the stiff structure of the 11th gen Civic platform and good suspension and steering tuning out of the box makes it a very responsive and fun to handle car even in the corners. The tires on this car are also wider than most of its hybrid competitors, being the exact same factory size as the Si.

The lack of manual transmission is already being missed, but using the steering mounted paddles to manually adjust the regen levels give a surprising engagement to the driving experience. At max regen throttle off, the car feels just like a manual transmission engine braking rather than the typical runaway feeling of a typical automatic trans setup.

2) It's still a Civic (and basically a Prelude). Even though this car will never get an exhaust that sounded as good as my old Greddy DDR in my Si, there are still many aftermarket upgrades that will fit on this car since other than the powertrain, it is still a regular ol' Civic. There's already a wealth of information on suspension, chassis, and appearance enhancing modifications that exists and parts are very easy to come by. With the current Honda Prelude basically being a coupe version of this car with nicer suspension and brakes, I'd imagine eventually the money could be spent instead on modifications on the FL4 instead of buying a Prelude and basically have a much more practical and well handing 4 door Prelude.

The HPD accessories also look pretty good for the 11th gen hatchbacks, especially the wing, so I made sure that was the first thing I added within my first week with the car.

The facelift look took a little bit to grow on me but especially with the new HPD front underbody spoilers, I think the front end looks really good. (That is the next on the list to add.)

3) I love the interior. While almost everything was great with my old Si, the coupe body style with the moonroof meant that I wouldn't always fit comfortably in the car in my driving position, and I definitely would not fit in the car with a helmet on. This meant despite being the perfect car for weekend track days or autocross, I couldn't participate in any of them because I simply couldn't drive the car safely with a helmet on. The FL4 remedies this. The 11th gen hatchback body style manages to look pretty sleek for what it is while having crossover SUV levels of headroom, even with a moonroof. I can find my perfect driving position and I still have enough headroom to sit with whatever bulky headgear I choose to wear. While I would still prefer a coupe body style, it is nice to have a car with a moonroof that I can sit comfortably in without curling like a shrimp.

I also love the design of the interior and how thin the A pillars and doors are. It gives me the feeling of driving a 90s Honda again without the tin can feeling of driving a 90s Honda. The instrument panel design is also very classy and almost a bit retro which I am a big fan of. While I miss the sporty bucket seats of my Si, for a daily driver I have to admit the "normie" leather wrapped seats are really comfortable while giving me enough support for if I want to send it into a corner briskly.

4) I don't have to freeze on winter mornings. One benefit of having an automatic car is I have remote start now, which is especially useful for arctic Michigan winter mornings. That's something I always found myself wishing for whenever Jack Frost came around to tap on all the windows. It is a bit funny though, the last time I had a car with remote start was my Hyundai Kona N, which had a pretty loud exhaust that I could audibly confirm that it was running. With the FL4 being a hybrid however, it sometimes starts up in EV mode and it's hard to tell if the car actually started up or not. Even if it does fire up the gas engine, the mufflers do their job so well it's hard to tell without being directly next to the car.

I'm really excited to see where this new Civic takes me, and while I have to wait a bit to really do all the things I yearn to do to it, I'm glad I picked a car I enjoy enough to make giving up my Si less painful! Thanks for reading my long ramble about a silly hybrid Civic! :3

I'm hoping Honda gives me a Civic hybrid loaner when I take in the Type R, cause I was very surprised when we test drove the CRV Touring how good the drivetrain was. Like you said putting it in sport and adjusting the paddles made it very responsive.

We ended up buying an Acura ADX Advance instead of the CRV, because my wife wanted something smaller, but I really liked the CRV. I especially liked the direct drive transmission.

I'm surprised Acura doesn't put the hybrid system in the ADX, seems a good fit and would be quicker.

Honestly, I was like other enthusiasts and skeptical initially especially with the lack of a manual but I'm glad I gave it a chance! :) I owned a Honda CR-Z and still am a huge fan of those cars so I knew Honda was capable of making a fun to drive hybrid, but this time with actual pep!

It is an adjustment though because with pure ICE cars the engine responds first, then the turbo assists, but in this case, the electric motor responds first (almost silently) with the engine kicking in later to assist, giving a delayed response auditorily than what we are used to.

The HR-V (ZR-V outside of North America) comes as a hybrid already in other markets which makes it extra annoying that Honda America doesn't give NA buyers this option... Not to mention the ADX, which is a Acura-ized HR-V and the Integra not having a hybrid model makes no sense in this increasingly electrified automotive landscape when Acura has 0 production hybrid or electric vehicles here as of time of posting...

Now that it's starting to get sunnier here, I'm able to really see the sparkle of the pearl paint so I have no regrets with picking it over Boost Blue! (I'd also feel like a phony having Boost Blue on a non-turbo, hybrid car. :p)

I'll be honest I've made that comment a couple times in (half) jest but I'm also the first to mention that it is only quicker from a dig, up to 60, in "launch mode" (it's hard to beat what is basically an electric drivetrain that doesn't need to shift and has instant torque) but once they're at speed, the Si has more room to go than the hybrid since the electric motor is only rated to operate up to a bit less than 90 mph iirc, at which point it shuts off and you're left with a 140 hp NA economy engine to do the propulsion.

I can also say comparing to my FC3 Si, the LSD is definitely missed when going through corners. I was hoping they'd incorporate some kind of LSD into the hybrid system with the Prelude but it doesn't seem like that's something they really cared about for this drivetrain (understandably). The hybrid handles great, but nowhere as confident in the corners as my old Si.

Congrats on the FL4! Can't go wrong with the 11th Gen body and interior. Jealous of your 50+ mpg with the current gas prices.

Another FL4 in Michigan. Basically same as yours minus the wing. Thinking about some mods.

I would love to pay $4.00, as that was the norm here in Socal. Now it's like $5.60 for 87 (Shell) couple miles away where I fill up my Camry. The nearest gas station near me is Mobile, @ $6.20 for 87.

Did you consider a 2024 Sport Touring with the 6mT? Just curious cause we're thinking of getting one of those for our son when he starts driving in a year or two. Or maybe a 2020-2021 hatch or Si if I can find one that's not too tired.

Funny you mention that. I own a 2024 Sport Touring 6mt my father gave to me! It is an absolutely fantastic car. The only unfortunate thing is that it doesn't have the cool script on the dash! I average 28.4 mpg slightly hard driving in the city/suburbs and up to 35 average on the interstate!

Yeah, I had a 2017 Sport hatch 6mT, and traded it (with 90k miles) for a 2020 Si. I definitely preferred the Si for the LSD and stuff but loved the 6mT hatch, and I just have an unnatural attraction to hatches. :D

The script on the dash is something I added myself :) You can add it to your 6MT too! I got mine on eBay, but they're all over Etsy too

I would have gone for another manual Civic if they were available, but I was looking for a brand new car (I wanted to lease to help bury some negative equity) but unfortunately the only manual Civics for 2026 is the Si and Type R. I would have got an Si if they had one since it's a similar price to the ST Hybrid, but the dealer didn't have one at the time and I'm not a huge fan of sedans, mostly coupes and hatchbacks. I especially like the 11th gen hatches since they're more like the old liftbacks like we used to have with the 2000s economy coupes (Tiburon, RSX, Celica, etc).

Also, man I would've loved if my parents back in the day got me a turbo manual Civic for my first car hehe! (I had a '97 del Sol S I saved up for as my first car, so I still got to feel a bit cooler than my friends and their Chevy Equinox :3)

Sooooo a lot of things happened very fast over the past weekend 😅

A combination of free time, free springs, free camber arms, and wheels from my Si and we ended up with this:

11th Gen Honda Civic Traded In My FC3 Si for the New FL4 Sport Touring Hybrid 20260401_091316

My friend has a 2023 Civic Si and initially lowered it on Swift springs with Whiteline rear camber arms, but ended up upgrading to coilovers and the springs were left sitting around for a couple years in another friend's garage. He also happened to have a spare set of camber arms from being sent an extra set, so those were laying around too. Over the past weekend we finally had some nice weather after a long winter, and with everyone also happening to be free, we decided to get use of the parts on my FL4.

Initially, we were hoping to drop the entire Si front strut with the lowering spring in, but discovered that the hybrid Civics have a different front knuckle design than the ICE Civics like the LX, non-hybrid Sport, and Si. The bore of the strut mount on the knuckle and strut are significantly smaller compared to the Si (We measured it but I don't remember the measurements anymore unfortunately right now).

Thankfully, the sway bar endlinks on the front and the rear are the same size and the springs are still compatible between the Si and Hybrid, so we just installed it like a normal lowering spring install. Things went smoothly, and the Whiteline rear camber arms also fit, they were just annoying to do like on any CivicX/CivicXI lol.

The car still needs an alignment, so I haven't really got to test out the new setup yet, but I can say the ride is much stiffer than stock while not being crashy. It's just about the level of responsiveness and stiffness I wanted from a sporty commuter like my Si. Again, I still need the alignment before I make a full judgement on it, but the steering also feels much heavier than stock. A complaint I had before about the car is, especially in Normal Mode, the steering was far too light and sometimes felt vague, especially at higher speeds. For this reason in stock form, I have been driving mostly in Individual Mode with my everything set to normal but with Sport steering. Now I feel like I can feel more of the road and have more confidence in what my front wheels are doing. This will obviously also improve once the car is properly aligned.

The wheels are 18x9.5 +40 SSR GTX-01s with 245/40/R18 tires I had on my old FC3 and I think I like them more on this car than I did on my black FC3 :3 Something about the gunmetal wheels on the bright white paint is a nice contrast I think.

I finished up the weekend by adding a factory paint matched Yofer front lip I got for $120 shipped to my door, and I think it really brings out the front end of the car. I always felt like there was something missing for the facelifted 11th gen Civics and the Yofer lip adds the look I was looking for. If you squint, I think it even makes it look kinda like a FL5 hehe!
I was concerned that the lip would make the car too low but it can still handle most speed bumps without any angle so I think they're going to work for me.
