The lols are authentic sorry, but back on topic reciprocal tariffs let’s look at the reality. The problem with the whole strategy is the haphazard way he is doing it and basically taxing the people he claims to want to help. See grown ups try to work out issues not threaten to take over countries or threaten to use bombing or tariffs to make countries cower to Us. His strategy is played out and it’s making other countries form coalitions to deal with it. We also do not have the ability to produce what we need, we are cutting our supply chain when we can’t supply ourselves. There is literally no upside to how this trade war is being waged and the only people that will suffer will be the thousands that will lose jobs and watching the market crash.
Globalization over time pitted each country to become involved in this current mess.

They're doing it to us first and it's hurting our industries so I'm willing to suffer a little for my kids to have more jobs in the future.

I'm dead serious now. I'm ignoring the trolling now so stay on point.
the problem with that logic is we are allowing other countries to form coalitions and basically wage a world trade war on us, we aren’t the biggest on the block anymore China/india/ Brazil/ all massive markets that can and will over take us. Your kids and mine will not have opportunities here and the ones they do will be at the mercy of other countries. We have utilized tariffs before but doing it like a moron with this bravado and wwe style tactics and drama does nothing but make us more enemies. Plus they want to bring more hb1 visas here, why do you think??! Oh wait I know so it squeezes out higher paid American citizens so yeah if you really cared about the children’s future you would want where the government isn’t prioritizing brining in high level foreign immigration. So this land of milk and honey after sacrifice is just a fallacy. Trade wars do not benefit the middle class nor the majority of America.

I have seen this point made but I think of it more like it’s intertwined all of us and when someone doesn’t play nice no matter how important they think they are it can be devastating. We put ourselves here and our markets are heavily saturated with foreign investment, we sold ourselves a long time ago and the actions of the administration is not helping us at all.

Trump has consistently framed trade deficits as a sign that the U.S. is being exploited by its trading partners, and Japan is no exception. In 2023, the U.S. trade deficit with Japan was $68.5 billion, with Japan exporting significant volumes of goods—particularly automobiles and auto parts (29% and 5.5% of its $20 trillion in U.S. exports, respectively)—while importing less from the U.S. in value terms. During his March 4, 2025, address to Congress, Trump emphasized “reciprocal tariffs” to mirror what other countries charge the U.S., aiming to level the playing field. Japan’s average tariff on U.S. imports is 3.2%, compared to the U.S.’s 1.4% on Japanese goods, a gap Trump has highlighted as unfair.

I'm willing to fight if you're not, it's okay. We're done being the world's piggy bank. No amount of avoiding the direct subject will help win this argument. This country has fallen apart and it's time to get it back to what it was.

First of all, Trump is not an economist, he’s a failed businessman (multiple times over), but that fact aside:

Raising tariffs on foreign goods to be paid for by Americans doesn’t lower the cost of domestic production. US labor is more expensive than in foreign nations, that is what incentivized companies to move production overseas in the first place. If “they” want to bring production back to the US, next they’ll be working on dismantling labor unions and freezing minimum wage. Plot twist, that’s already been happening for a long time.

America has not been the world’s piggy bank, it has been the world’s top consumer. Foreign investors like from Japan, China, UK, Canada, own about a third of America’s debt, so it’s more accurate to call them the bank.

Did you see that part of the Carmudgeon Show episode with Reagan of all people, Mr. Trickle-down-economics-never-worked himself, explaining why tariffs don’t work?

Cheers

Devils advocate here. What are your credentials being that you are a economist?

Leasing out your name to buildings, hotels and golf courses is one hell of a business by any standard. Running a successful campaign to become a president is no easy task. Many entrepreneurs have tried and failed.

I agree that you are being the devil’s advocate.

One does not have to be an economist to understand what I wrote, and would hope that level of understanding still accompanies a high school diploma these days, if not just being alive for the last 20-50 years.

My credentials are modest, but when movies need to convince the audience that characters are smart, they typically indicate they went to my school.

In truth I believe that you don't even understand what you wrote. We can at least agree on you not being a economist.
When you posted the Carmudgeon Show I sort of figure that's where you get your understanding from.

You must have missed the trade surplus statistics I posted 😆

Happy liberation day 🥳 🎉

A few more hours of this your might need a wellness check.

Interesting points but I would like you to take a look at the numbers your posted 1.4% 3.2%, those are normal standard tariffs. Trump is throwing around 20-30%, see the issue is his complete disregard for any policy that isn’t flashy or news worthy. He operated under “go big or go home” type philosophy which tends to end badly. He is using tariffs against allies, of which China has reached out a big helping hand to Canada and Mexico, hell BYD has plants in Mexico, instead of solidifying alliances with our closest neighbors he is threatening them. Trumps whole frame work is sick neocon/facist wet dream of taking back American supremacy which we sold a long time ago.

Also let’s put this point to bed, trump has taken 275 million from one person, his son in law was “awarded” a 2 billion dollar investment fund from Saudi Arabia. 100 million from Miriam Adelson. Why do I mention this bc it’s amazing how space x got a massive contract from the government that was supposed to go to Verizon, Saudi Arabia is getting a lot of arms now from the US and guess who is against the crack down on anti-Israeli protest at college campuses. He has sold every bit of his power his net worth has doubled in the last 4 years, can yall be so naive as to think he cares about the normal American. This is all a grift and everything else he does is a smoke screen to cover while they bleed us dry. The faith yall put in a crook is just astounding.
