For what it's worth, I had the opposite experience with an E92 M3. I found it to be a particularly visceral experience, based on the combo of the incredible exhaust note and some of the best steering feel I've ever experienced on a car.
I agree, though on the spectrum of decent sounding 4cyl turbos, I feel like the R is one of the worst. Of course it's particularly tough when the other car in the stable plays sweet 5cyl turbo music. Every time I go back to the Type R from the RS, I have to shut the valve on my REMUS. It's no bueno.
Based on the Suzuka video, I don't think that they've improved the sound at all. What I heard sounded very similar to the fake engine noise on the 2020+ FK8.
I really don't understand it - every other manufacturer seems capable of making a good sounding engine/exhaust but Honda. Even with my...
I'm rather impressed with how light it turned out to be. At 3249lbs, it's only around 130 lbs heavier than the FK8, even with AWD. And if the current gen SI is any indication, the new Type R may put on a few lbs. The two could be nearly the same weight.
Can't wait. If it's close to the FK8 in engagement and driver's feel, it's an instant buy for me. I've always preferred smaller cars - my Type R is a bit large for my preference. Plus, a tuned 430 wtq through the front wheels is not fun when you're stuck commuting through deep snow, snow tires...
It sounds like you're not very familiar with the history of the model at all. The FK8 was a minor, iterative step up from the FK2 - the only major change was the introduction of an independent rear suspension instead of the FK2's torsion beam. Same dual-axis MacPherson front strut, same K20C1...
My guess is that they know that the reveal isn't really going to offer anything revolutionary, so they're trying to drag out the hype. It's likely an FK8 with a new shell - still a great car, but nothing new.
I agree that bulletproof cooling from the factory would be worth the upgrade. If they can improve the gearbox synchros to eliminate the 2nd gear shifting issues, that would be another insta-upgrade. Finally, I'd be interested if the steering setup is calibrated for 265/30R19 from the factory...
One improvement that I'm really hoping for is an improvement to the exhaust sound. There are some FK8 exhausts that have borderline acceptable sound, but none of them sound great. Not sure what can be done but there are certainly other headifold style engines that sound decent.
I'd actually be very surprised if they added much power at all. The FK8 can sometimes get a little squirrelly doing WOT pulls with a tune, and I can't see Honda tuning the new car in such a way as to add any torque steer. Since they're already on the cusp of what you can do with FWD and still...
Hoping that it's not the exact same internals, turbo, fueling, and trans as the K20C1. Nothing wrong with the 10th gen, but it's a completely new model. They have a chance to iterate and improve, rather than slapping a fresh coat of paint on the same setup.
Do you find that the infotainment blocks visibility if you sit lower? That worry is probably the only thing keeping me from upgrading to the new Type R.
I'm curious: what aero do you think is missing from the new one so as to make it softer? There are visible lower front vents extending through the wheel wells to clear side vents. There are obvious side skirts, as well as a large wing. Other than the tiny vortex generators on the roof of my FK8...
I was originally really excited to trade up to the new generation. As far as I can tell though, Honda phoned in the entire 11th gen. New coat of paint and a smattering of new comfort and tech features, but otherwise no R&D went into anything related to revised suspension or drivetrain. If you...
