I am thinking of replacing the OEM air filter with a BMC or K&N product, FB01183 or 33-5139, respectively.
Anyone have an opinion of which would be best, or another alternative, or even chime in if not worth doing at all.

My long term experience with K&N was it let enough fine sand through to significantly wear the valve guides (FL beach town, CRX Si). The K&N was installed for about 75K miles. Filter was washed and re-oiled every 15K miles with K&N products.
Following Jackson Racing's advice once the warranty expired, I installed the K&N, removed an airbox baffle, and installed a high flow muffler on the CRX Si. These changes really made a difference, with RE71 tires spinning in 1st gear as the car came on cam.
My CTR's OEM filter looks pretty dirty after 5K miles, typical of my experience with good cold air intakes (they ingest a lot of dust).
