I drive an 11th-generation 1.5t Civic. I've driven 8,000 miles so far. During my first oil service at the authorized service center, I noticed that 5w30 oil was used. When I went back for my last service, I had them use 0w20. What is the appropriate oil for these vehicles? I'm currently using 0w20. Will using 5w30 damage my engine?

What your owner manual say ?

it is surely the 0-20 which is recommended, not the 5-30 which will probably not damage the engine in the long term, I do not know, but could increase fuel consumption, I would avoid and follow Honda's recommendation.

The owner's manual clearly states 0W20. However, the authorized service center used 5W30 oil without asking. After driving 4,800 km, I had another oil change and added 0W20. I'm currently using 0W20. Has 5W30 harmed my engine?

Thank you. I'm currently using 0w20 and will continue to do so.

It's very strange that the authorized service uses 5w30 instead of the 0w20 stated in the manual. When I asked, they said they didn't have any 0w20 oil in stock during the maintenance, so they used 5w30, and that this oil was compatible.

Unfortunately, I'm not very skilled at this maintenance. That's why I go to an authorized service center. Yes, it's very expensive, you're right. I want to trust the authorized service center, but they've confused me about the oil.

The 0W-20 really is just for gas mileage. Protection wise, the 5w-30 probably protects your engine a bit better. Especially if youre in hot climate. I use 5-30 in summer and 0-20 in winter.

I use Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 or Quaker State Euro full synthetic 5W-40 in all my cars (19 yr old BMW naturally aspirated engine; 7 yr old BMW turbo-charged engine, and 1 year old Type R). These Pennzoil and Quaker State oils are about the same; both excellent quality and both companies owned by Shell. (see this page: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/t...uro-is-the-same-as-pennzoil-5w40-euro.357736/ )
I believe 0W-20 was introduced during the last few years to squeeze out more fuel savings, but it's only about 1% - 2% better mpg. I would rather use better quality oil that offers more protection than get a miniscule increase in mpg, especially in a performance car.
Also, other very good 0W-xx motor oil options include Castrol Edge Euro Car 0W-30 A3/B4 or 0W-40 A3/B4.
Checking manufacturers approvals also can be helpful. BMW LL-01, Porsche A40, and especailly MB 229.5 actually mean something. The Mercedes approval is the most stringent.

If you want to keep your car for 15 years and reach 250K miles, it's worth analyzing the type of oil, otherwise not.

My previous car a 2018 Civic
It has always seemed smoother after each oil change, regardless of the temperature.

And where I live, in Canada, it gets very hot and very cold. And I have always used 0-20 as recommended.

Hot climate: 5W30 (less mpg [more l/100km]), cold 0w-20
