Honda in its entire history has never made an Si or Type R that wasn't a pure driver's car and manual exclusive. They always have taken their performance offerings very seriously. Competitors put things like M or ST badges on SUVs because they are run by bean counters selling pretend enthusiast cars that appeal to mass market non enthusiasts.
The Si has never been about straight line acceleration. It has always been about the driver experience, especially the shifter- which is still to this day superior to anything that comes from any brand that isn't named Porsche or Ferrari. Some competitors have more horsepower out of the box than the Si but they don't have as good of a manual, they are heavier, they don't handle as well, and most of them do not have an LSD. The Si has consistently been a better driver's car than its competitors. If you really want more power out of the Si, there is a huge aftermarket with plentiful tuning options.
The Si is twice the car the current gen Civic Hybrid is. It has superior suspension, brakes, and chassis rigidity. It even has some suspension bits from the Type R. The 1.5T in the Si is also an enhanced stronger version than what was put in the other Honda offerings. And no, no base model Civic drives anything like an Si. Anyone telling you the Hybrid is like an automatic Si is a moron or a liar who knows absolutely nothing about cars. The difference between driving a car with an LSD and one without is night and day- the hybrid civic is going to just one wheel peel if you try to accelerate and corner at the same time, the Si will grip for days.
The only reason the Civic Hybrid is anywhere close in acceleration is because it doesn't have to shift. The Civic Hybrid is nearly 400 pounds heavier than the Si. The Si has a far superior power to weight ratio and it is going to feel faster and pull better everywhere.
