One of the first things I did when I got mine was disable that feature. My understanding—though I could be wrong—is that the data could be used in the event of an insurance claim being denied. Someone can correct me if I’m mistaken. And if they ever want to repossess the car, they’ll be able to find it anyway.

Personally, I think it’s silly to have that feature. On top of that, if an “update” comes through that limits your car’s functionality, it’s just an over-the-air change. Maybe it’s just my paranoia and overthinking, but it feels like big companies are always looking for ways to take advantage while making money off of us.

I could be completely wrong, and maybe it is an amazing feature. But I don’t see why I should pay a monthly fee to open my own garage door when I can just install a mirror with a remote—or better yet, the car could come with it built in from the start.

It takes less than 1/2 hour to disconnect the telematics unit, then Honda will not have your data. Remove the dash panel on the forward side of the touch screen to get at the unit. I found sitting in the passenger side provides better access.

You won't be able to use HondaLink if that matters. Just a heads up.

Depending on the year and model, Hondalink features are no more anyway.
