What did you do to your FL5 today?

Not the person you asked, but I love my hybrid racing shifter. It makes the throws, especially 1-2 so much shorter. After using it for a few months I couldn't imagine going back to stock slop. I want to get one for my son's Si now because that car has the worst shifter I have ever felt.

You haven't driven a WRX or VW I see

I cannot really compare my Hybrid Racing Short Shifter since I put it in as soon as I got the FL5...

I had their short shifter in my 07 FA5 Si and loved it.

first of all, it is adjustable, I adjusted it (left/right/fore/aft and height to be perfect for me)

I topped it with a Mishimoto round walnut shift knob which I love.

note that I also installed the HR shift cable bushings, so the report below is for the combination (position 1 both fore/aft and left/right)

shifting is precise, feels solid w/minimal wiggle, fast return to center, makes it quick and accurate, less guessing which gear I am in

On the FL5 I recall using a 10mm socket with a wrench and extension and needle nose pliers. I think also a 14mm for the shifter knob.

I liked the stock shifter but absolutely love the Hybrid Racing Short Shifter and its adjustability (currently using on 1 and 1). There is no slop in the gate and the smooth mechanical feeling shifting through the gears is awesome. It should have been one of my first mods.

I am a software engineer. Not very good with hardware… much easier to fix software after I break it…

yet I was able to install it myself.

As far as tools, stuff that I had at home, 10mm socket and deep socket, screwdriver, Allen wrench etc

I watched several videos and followed the instructions.

Most difficult for me was removing some of the wire connectors and I managed to break one of the plastic tabs

though for the cable bushings I also followed Acuity instructions

Most difficult part for the bushings was pressing them into place. I ended up temporarily using a wire to tie the bushings to the cable after having to dig up the bushings from the plate under the engine which required lifting the car. I believe that I used two pieces of wire and twisted them to hold down the bushings on one side while pressing town on the other side of the bushings

To install the shifter you also need a Philips head screwdriver to remove the center console and a small Allen key. Allen key is a trick to drop the shift boot collar to be able to access the nut tightened against the shift knob without having to cut the zip tie:



Removing the cable connection on the driver's side was a bit of a pain. Rotating the metal clip did not work so I straightened one end to remove it. For reassembly, I needed to attach the cable connection to the HR shifter first, reinstalled the metal clip through the hole in the arm (installed like a cotter pin) and bent the end of the clip back into place.

Also, the four supplied bolts would not fit when bolting the shifter down (different thread pitch) so I reused the stock bolts.

yes. totally independent. I did the shifter first, then a week later the bushings.

Oh, btw, I just found out about the detent springs and got a pair...

So now I will have to do it all over again and take everything apart to install the Hybrid Racing Heavy Duty Transmission Detent Springs

if you want the springs, might as well install them at the same time.

I passed on the detent springs. Installing the HR short shifter by itself was sweet enough for me.

you definitely need the short shifter

btw, I was able to find the HR Short Shifter in eBay for $409 and free shipping...

Sounds like you are ready to move up to sleeving the block, installing a stroker kit, port matching, etc. 4 Piston Racing is one place to start.
