American Honda Seals 2023 Sales Momentum with Strong December, Annual Sales Up Over 30%

• American Honda sales top 1.3 million units, up 33% in 2023
• Honda brand finishes 31.9% up on sales of 1,162,531 units; Acura closes up 42% in 2023 on sales of 145,655
• Honda electrified models set an all-time sales record with CR-V and Accord hybrids combining for 293,640 units - representing over one-quarter of total Honda brand sales
• CR-V sales (361,457) strengthens its position as America’s best-selling crossover of the past 25 years
• Picking up new buyers, Ridgeline (52,001) posts the model’s all-time best annual sales performance
• Strong passenger car sales see Civic (200,381) & Accord (197,947) combine for nearly 400,000 units for 2023
• Acura Integra sales of 32,090 lead luxury gateway segment by a wide margin
• Acura MDX and RDX add 9,102 in December to reach nearly 100,000 units in 2023

Sales Highlights

Honda brand posted three consecutive quarters with sales over 300,000 units

• CR-V was the best-selling Honda model in 2023, topping 30,000 units for a 10th straight month in December; 55% of 2023 sales were hybrid-electric
• Civic sales were up 50% over 2022, with a new Civic hybrid coming in 2024
• Pilot posts strong December sales (10,565) to gain 17.5% over 2022
• Odyssey sales jump 57% to 74,738 units in 2023

Model Notes
Honda was named the #1 mainstream brand for a 3rd straight year in ALG’s top retained value list.
The 2024 Ridgeline features a new TrailSport trim - enhancing off-road capability.

• Integra tops 2,000 units for the 15th straight month in December
• RDX sales climbed 58.5% to top 39,000 units in 2023
• MDX finishes the year over 57,000 units

+30% is incredible! But when you look at what Honda has done, I don’t see anything in the lineup that isn’t compelling, except the TLX. It’s a great car, but just doesn’t quite have the performance to compete with the German cars in the segment. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with the TLX in the coming months.

Good news! Anecdotal, but my local dealership had zero inventory on the lot for 3 years. Now there's a handful of each model on the lot.

I too am an optimist at heart, but it’s hard not to be a bit of a jaded Honda fanatic. If you were a young adult in the mid to late 90’s and early 2000’s, then you know what I mean. If/when Honda announces anything super cool I’m like, show me...please. They finally showed up to the party with the FK8. It only took like 15 years.

I’d be hard pressed to see a new S2000. That would make sense for this market with a halo Honda (not Acura) rear wheel drive car.

The numbers are still low, but definitely recovering from the prior year sales.

As a point of reference : In 2019 Honda sold nearly 326k Civics in the US.
2017 was an all time high at ~377k Civics sold in the US.
