Anyone own a stock 04-07 STI or 03-06 EVO with the CTR? Any similarities ?

i still have my 2006 EVO IX MR. Chassis - stock for stock- Type R is stiffer. Type R has a better power band. to be honest, stock for stock, they acted similar to each other. The differences really come into view when you push the cars. The AWD Evo is pretty mean to drive at slow speeds - but becomes sublime at high speeds, where the Type R drives great at lower speeds and feels a bit out of it's element at higher speeds.

BTW: I am the original owner of my EVO and Type R. I've had the EVO since brand new off the lot. that was a great day.

That’s what I was looking to hear. I always wanted to buy one but they were always snotted local to me. Now if I could just find a Time Machine!
Does your IX MR have the zero lift kit?

is your CTR a fk8 or fl? Also if you could only have one which are you keeping and WHY? Thanks

Interesting, what did you like about the steering more? I wanted the GD with the 2015 steering rack but they were different lengths and not a straight swap. I felt the GD had slow steering.
I never felt like the GD steering was that slow. I drove my 16 and 05 back to back and found that the GD steering, while a hair slower, felt more connected and communicative to the road. It had more feel than the 16 did, and never once was the steering speed an issue or something I ever thought of until reading your question now. My 2016 just felt like a much heavier less connected and significantly slower car all around. Every performance metric felt worse driving both, while the 16 benefitted from more space inside, storage room and amenities, and creature comforts. That’s about the only thing the 16 did better but I actually found myself still being more comfortable driving my 2005.

We did some data logging between the two cars and my 05, on a set of pilot sport cups ran a 4.27 0-60 and a 12.9 1/4 mile , my 2016 ran a 5.0 and 13.9

Any trap speeds for those passes? And by what I mean the Steering is just the rack speed how quick the response is for the input not the weight since the 2015+had heavier and bigger wheels and tires so its expected to be . Also the car weighs quite a bit more than the GD so it will be slower stock for stock.

Also if the GD is running 12 second passes it can’t be stock. Hell they made 230-240whp back then and still weight was over 3200lbs.

Just very curious, mine ran 12.6 @ 108mph with a 1.6 60ft back in 2008 with around 320whp, intake, exhaust and reflash.

Maybe I can find the data its somewhere on my comp from when I scanned it. My 05 was bone stock, nothing but sport cup tires on it. It was a 60k mile car that was rarely really well taken care of. Stock intake, exhaust, ECU, all original. What year was your STI? My stock 07 with that emissions tune was much slower...

Cannot remember the trap speed, but it was higher than the new VA STI. I am almost certain a CTR would have a higher trap speed, but up to 100mph the GD would probably be faster even from a roll . The problem with those Subarus is that there are so many bad ones, the 07 stock tune was garbage, people say the 04 was a hair slower than the 05 some say a hair quicker. The 05 was the nicest out of the years I had by a mile, also imo best one they ever made. 04 had the bugeye interior and 05 got that nice updated dash/radio HVAC and seat bolstering etc...

How much of that is tires? Would Sport cup 2 tires make a difference? would it give the EVO or STI the edge over the FL5

Mine was an 06 so it was quick before they went to the bad tune. Stock tires for those 2 cars were really sticky. Barely street legal tires in my opinion. It also had the shorter gearing which helped with acceleration.

But even the motortrend figures prove the Type R is faster to 100mph even with the launch disadvantage. So from a roll its not even a contest. Stock for stock of course.

That's right. Bridgestone Potenza RE070 for the Subaru and Yokohama Advan A048 for the Evo, IIRC. The Advans were one of the best tires out at the time. Incredible grip in the dry, but mediocre at best in the wet or in cold temps.

Stock engine tuning isn’t even close. I love how smooth the Honda engine is. Pulls so strong to redline.

I much prefer the steering ratio on the Honda, much tighter. Steering feel is pretty good too.

Just wanted to add some more posts since I have some time now.

the STI's I owned

2006 STI
2017 STI
2021 STI

Evo
2003 EVO 8
2008 EVO 10

The FK8 felt like more of a newer car and everything was better IMO. Was it as raw as the 06 STI and the EVO 8? Of course not but that's just how the cars were manufactured (Like lightweight tin cans). Kinda like when the EVO 10 came out it felt like a tank compared to the 8 and 9. I've also owned a 3 pack core GRC also so I have experienced a lot of cars (so many others also)

So my bro owned a 2005 STI since new. That car blew me away with it's combination of power, on rails handling, and slot car like feel.

I've also owned a 2013 as the original owner. In stock form that thing was too soft; lots of body roll, not enough rebound dampening (chassis wouldn't settle down after large bumps), and the steering lacked feel on track. Well I blew it's EJ on track and went to a 2015 STI, which was much stiffer suspension and chassis wise. It felt sorted and composed, with better steering feedback. On track it was 2 seconds clear of the 2013 on the same tires on a 4.0 mile track. Well I blew that EJ as well, both were stock ?

I went to the dark side and bought a 2015 EVO X GSR. It and the VA STI were in a similar level, but the Evo was more of a hoot because it has even more communicative steering, a lightning fast steering rack, and that hoonigan active yaw rear diff. Compared to the FL5 the EVO has a significantly taller roofline and now feels tippy AF (high center of gravity). The EVO X also feels like a rental car by comparison lol. Over the winter I bought 3k worth of coilovers and chassis bracing in an attempt to replicate more of the FL5 sophistication.

My FL5 has the DE5 ADS computer and that is about perfect for me. It feels the most focused and sorted of all the cars I've owned. It's my personal opinion this car hunkers down and stays composed the harder you push it. I love how ar higher speed you definitely feel the aero gluing the car to the road for high speed stability and grip. Feels like an absolute world beater. The steering feels well weighted and I prefer it's ratio and overall feel over the EVO.

fwiw, I also have a '23 BRZ that I've done 20 or so track days with. What an amazingly fun little car. It ironically gives me a similar feeling to that slot car like feel of the '05 STI, but with an even lower center of gravity, and retains that Subaru AWD feeling of massive stability. If go on an epic Northwoods drive the BRZ is the car I gravitate towards. Same for the FL5 though.
