Honda OE filters are also not fully covered by plastic. They only cover the open portion of the oil filter, with the blue portion exposed to the touch.

This is not true of the Japan market 15400-RTA-003. It is completely covered.

That was true many years ago. I don’t recall what year it changed but current OE filters are completely wrapped

On the positive side, I returned the set of 3 filters to Amazon without issue. Drove by Honda and picked up an OEM filter which they assured me now has a new part#. Apparently it has changed twice in the last few months.

Post pics! Including what the filter looks like in the wrapping. It will help everyone reading this thread in the future.

The 15400-R5G-H01 is a genuine OEM engine oil filter manufactured by Mahle for Honda and Acura vehicles. [1, 2, 3]

Key Details
    • Manufacturer: Mahle (Made in China) [1, 2]
    • Replaces Older Part Numbers: Supersedes and replaces earlier numbers like 15400-PLM-A02, 15400-RBAF01, and 15400-PR3-014. [1, 2, 3, 4]
    • Features: Built-in anti-drainback valve (silicone) to prevent dry starts, a heavy-duty base plate, and high-efficiency filter media. [1, 2]
    • Price Range: Typically sells between $6.81 and $10.21 online through authorized parts dealers like Honda Parts Now. [1, 2]
    • Vehicle Fitment: Fits most post-1989 Honda and Acura models (including 1.5L, 3.0L, and 3.5L gas engines). [1, 2]

bought a pack of 3 off Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CWG8JYDS a while back. 3 filters and 3 washers. Washers were not packaged with the filter; just rolling around the shipping box. seems legit but take a look, thx
Okay so coming back to this one specifically:

Again I am not saying that I'm sure they're fake.

This style of label does not seem to be used on the made-in-Japan filters that are sold in Japan.

The one thing that gives me pause is that Honda's US supplier Fram went through Chapter 11 this year, and Honda USA started sourcing filters from wherever they could. Exigent circumstances. Could that have meant they were required to relabel or repackage Mahle-made Japanese filters? Not a clue!

For reference, here are some legit Honda stickers using that style of barcode layout etc:

11th Gen Honda Civic Beware 15400-RTA-003 1791578266003-sa

Here's what I notice being different about the oil filters you posted:

  • The radius of the corner of the sticker seems wrong. Honda's labels almost look rectangular and then you look close and there's a small radius on the corners. On that oil filter box sticker, the radius is much more pronounced.
  • The "GENUINE PARTS" and "Honda Motor Co., Ltd." are a much bolder font in the known-genuine Honda labels. On that oil filter box, it doesn't even look bold at all.
  • The fonts in the white area are all different from what you see on the known-genuine Honda labels.
  • In particular, the "1" (this represents the quantity) is much smaller and placed oddly.

Now, it bears pointing out that Honda doesn't maintain perfect consistency of this stuff. If I had to guess, across all of their manufacturing facilities and partners, there are different brands of label printers and software being used. The red part of the label is pre-printed on every sticker, the part inside the white box is likely printed on-demand and on-site. So that leads to natural variation when there's one single machine doing the printing.

But this stuff in combination with the loose shrink wrap makes me lean towards these being counterfeit.

If you aren't 100% sure the 15400-RTA-003 you have is legit, you are much better off running a filter sourced from a US Honda dealer in my opinion, even if it is made in Mexico/China/Whatever. Reason being, the fakes that say they're made in Japan often have very, very bad internals that could lead to serious engine damage. For example, see this thread:

I bought 3 filters online on one of these "Honda" part stores, because I refuse to go to my local dealer due to the fact that they are a crap dealer and shady. The other dealers are an 1hr or more. Anyway I pay 30 dollars for 3 filters but since I have the car, I’ve been using the "bad" one without any issues. Decided to see what was the fuss of using the Japanese one but got scammed I think because all the 003 I find pictures are different to the ones I received, I will attach pictures but I will be sticking to the 002 because has been working fine for me anyway. Probably I’m wrong but I’ll be throwing them away to avoid any headaches. Just beware that now they are making copies of your beloved Japanese filter and the stores aren’t even bothering on checking them.

Which Honda parts store online? Most popular is College Hills Honda, half this forum orders from them. I hope it wasn’t them.

This is such a poor copy that the barcode has the wrong part number in it.

That barcode brings up 15400-PLM-A02, not 15400-RTA-003.

This is my first time hearing about H01, the bullet points mention this is replacing A02? I still see A02 on the dreamshop.

Me too. The staff at my local Honda took umbrage with me questioning the part number. I said that part# is wrong and they borderline yelled at me. Level heads prevailed and they explained that Honda has been changing the sourcing at least twice in the last 6 months. Each change brought a parts number change. They did not go into detail but alluded to an apparent cost containment strategy.
They also acknowledged that there are lots of the old part numbers floating around BUT they did not carry them.
I asked them about counterfeit parts being sold on Amazon and they were clueless.

15400-R5G-H01 is a legit part number.

As I alluded to above, Honda’s US supplier went through Chapter 11. That’s the reason for all the changes and new part numbers.

A real 15400-R5G-H01 from the dealer is going to keep your warranty intact and a fake 15400-RTA-003 is not.

Surprised why this hasn't been updated on their site then, probably getting rid of old stock is my guess.

Nothing alarming. We'd have to know where ea version 003 came from. There's mahle tennex and filtech suppliers for Hondas oem filters. The crush washer in the top, clearly shows signs of a stuff and reseal, I wouldn't beat myself up about it.

What's worse is that I bought 6 of the inferior HO1's.... Knowing I had planned to blow through these "purposefully."

My Honda dealer also told me the China-made H01 is becoming the new standard. With "First Brands" going bankrupt and the FRAM Greenville plant closing, it makes sense that Honda's OEM filter supply is changing. Whether FRAM is permanently out of Honda's supply chain, I haven't been able to confirm.
