I am looking to buy some Mugen oil filers from Blackhawk Japan and was wondering how I pay the tariff. Do I contact the shipping company or do they contact me to pay the fee

The shipping carrier will contact you prior to delivery. The downside to this is you don't know what they will charge you until that moment. If you purchase through their eBay storefront, import fees are included. Someone who experienced this process very recently can provide a better account of what you should expect.

Ok thank you for your input, the price they have it for on their website is way cheaper than there eBay store. This order was just a test to see how the tariffs work because I really want to order some of the jdm optional parts they have on their site and some of the other jdm parts they offer on their site.

Correct, because the tariffs are baked into the price on the eBay storefront. Not sure you'll be able to draw a line through it because the way the carriers are approaching the tariffs is a straight up money grab and arbitrary. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

FedEx/UPS have been charging me after delivery. It’s 15% tariff + shipping company fee for automotive parts to the US.

register for a UPS my choice account with the shipping address. I've had it for years and it's free. You can see any UPS shipments coming in to that address. It is also where you can see the notifications for fees needed to be paid ahead of delivery and you will get a notification in your email that you registered.

Check this out an item I bought recently from Blackhawk that was literally the size of a silver dollar.

Rigid clutch stopper $19
shipping $29
Total was $48 from Blackhawk
Government Charge $2.85
UPS Brokerage and Gov fees $17.00
Total was $19.85 from UPS

Grand total was $67.85

If I had just bought the JSR Engines Clutch pedal stop kit $61.44 total shipped with tax.

I made a dumb move on that one. I just had no idea UPS was going to charge that much for a $19 part.

Be careful with this, pay very close attention and dont be afraid to question UPS. I ordered a carbon Spoon snorkel for my S2000 from Blackhawk for $267. UPS charged me $150 in Tariffs. I got the paperwork from UPS and Blackhawk did everything correct on their paperwork, but UPS submitted it to Customs as "RAW Aluminum from China" triggering a far higher tariff. Called them on it, get told Id get a refund, never came. Had to do a chargeback on my credit card, thankfully I had the email where they confirmed the amounts but it was massive PITA. No issue with Blackhawk as their paperwork to UPS was good but it put me off ordering much else from Japan for awhile.

+1. Ordered the euro horn from Black Hawk. UPS charged above the 15% tariff which put the fees at above 100% the price of the horn.

Went through their 90s-era email process after calling and had it reduced appropriately. The brokerage fee was still a significant portion of the price of the horn.

Seems like the extra fees are what really get you. It's not very black and white - you don't really know what you will owe until it's too late.

That's not been my experience with UPS/FedEx. They deliver then a week later you get emailed a bill.
Its not always going to be the same. I've had it where my package was delivered and then I received an email to pay additional customs and import fees after and I've had others where I paid the fees before having the package delivered.

I've placed a few orders from Black Hawk Japan’s eBay store, and the process was simple with no tariffs at all.

I’ve also ordered directly from their website, and as others have mentioned, most items were hit with about a 15% tariff.

There were a couple of exceptions, my Spoon lug nuts were charged a 50% tariff, and the Cusco braces came in at 25%. One interesting thing I noticed on that specific UPS Import Shipment Detail was that the “Entered Value” appeared to be about half of what I actually paid.

At the end of the day, after comparing total out-of-pocket costs (including shipping, taxes, and tariffs) to U.S.-based pricing, I still ended up saving a bit of money.
