Hello my fellow CTR brother and sisters, I am potentially having some long-term issues with my car and wanted to see what you all thought.
To fill you in I've had my '23 R for three years now, back in Jan I had my local dealer put on new pads, rotors and tires while so finally doing the steering recall by greasing the rack , all of the aftermath which I had previously documented here. Long story short with24 hours the car developed play in the steering rack, which they of course went on to replace. It's important to that before I had this done to the vehicle steering was incredibly tight, and I liked it; you actually had to some effort into it especially in a corner, this gave the car what I consider to be god-tier steering. It had the perfect amount to feedback, resistance, and I felt like the car was directly linked to my spinal column / brain stem. It I thought about turning it was already doing it.
Suffice it to say after this recall was done the steering has never felt the same or had the same amount of "bite" to it, the car also felt less like one solid unit. NOW I realize that this "bite" and feedback may have been, in fact, due to the car actually having the sticky steering issue. My running theory at this point is the car had the sticky steering in full force when I bought it and i simply didn't notice because I enjoyed it so much. (this is further backed up my vague remembering of the steering weight not really changing too much between drive modes, now this change is much more noticeable)
Since this time I have had the car looked at by two dealerships and two independent shops, none of them can find any play in the steering rack tie-rods, and the only thing that really brought the car back to that former glory is a proper aligned by a performance shop, some days the car feels super firm, others it feels a bit willowy and vague, and I've personally run the gambit of racking my brain trying to figure out if they messed up my during the rack replacement and something is off or if the sticky steering placeboed me into what I should expect the steering to feel like outside of mods. I've reached out to a local dealer one final time before my warranty runs it course (I plan on keeping this car) and their service director said he wants to bring a regional field tech because they've looked at it several times and found nothing, they "don't wanna waste our time and mine." I agreed but dude hasn't set a date for this yet..
Should I let this (different dealer) look at my car? Dude says they would need it for a couple days...which kinda makes me anxious, but if the car comes back from a Honda regional tech will a clean bill of health I may lean into lightly modding (rigid collars, still plate, anti sway to start) in attempt to regain some of that steering weight and directness that I loved some much. I know the car has a EPS box which, by nature, means the steering is a bit numb but I'd like to try and get back all of that feedback as possible. I haven't really driven the car in a while because now I feel the car is off I'm not sure where the limits are and the car feels at times unstable, leading to less confidence and less enjoyment.
If you've read this far I truly truly appreciate it, I am not a mechanic, and am still trying to learn about the mechanical side of the automotive world as much I can so i appreciate any and all input, thoughts, opinions. I absolutely love this car more than any other I've had, as I'm sure many of you can relate to, I know that feeling is there somewhere, I just gotta find it again somehow feel free to shoot me any questions...Thanks again for your time and energy, friends.
