XDI-2000cc injectors

There has been a lot of talk about our XDI-2000cc injectors for the Type R, including cold start issues and rough idle.
A competitor has published pictures of injector tips and corresponding spray videos that show a bad competitor injector.
People have been assuming that "the competitor injector" is ours and that the idle issues come from the "bad spray pattern".
We don't know what injector they found and called "competitor injector", but it's for sure not ours. Please check out the pictures below.

Bottom row: XDI-2000cc tip and spray holes

Our XDI spray pattern is very different, and even the tip shape and surface finish are different. The "competitor injector" has a machined surface, ours is sintered material. The "competitor injector” looks like the “Keihin” Injector from the Honda Si 1.5T.

Keihin 1.5L injector and spray holes, we at XDI don't use those

Now Regarding the Actual Spray Pattern Design

For the spray pattern geeks: counter bores reduce the L/D ratio (length over diameter), which leads to wider and shorter sprays (less chamber penetration).
That is not necessarily "better vaporization" or a “better spray”. It's great for emissions and fuel-air mixture with low air speed (low boost) and a ring of spray holes. When you add two spray holes in the center with small L/D, you add short, wide spray plumes in the center. There is no extra air in the center of all these spray holes. The sprays collide instead of mixing with air.

We studied a "dual center spray hole" design years ago. It poses the risk of a blown-off tip at high temperatures and fuel pressures, since it reduces the wall thickness between the spray holes in the injector tip below the required minimum, especially with deep counter bores.

At XDI we designed the outside holes with counter bores (small L/D) to fill the outside area of the combustion chamber without touching the cylinder walls.
We added a small-diameter single center hole with a bigger L/D and higher penetration, to reach the bottom-side corner of the combustion chamber.
That's where a lot of air ends up at higher boost, i.e. higher air speed. That extra air can create a local lean spot if you don't bring any fuel there.

So Why the Rough Idle if the spray pattern is good?

Our injector is BIG. It flows 80% more than the stock injector! What Honda does from the factory is run higher pressure on a small injector to provide the right amount needed, but with maximized vaporization. This is emissions optimized.

With an 80% larger injector, you would get 80% more flow even at idle, which is way too much. At regular stock pressure levels the ECU has to reduce the pulse width to the injector to reduce the required fuel volume for the target air fuel ratio (lambda). Our injector, and almost every DI injector out there, is highly non-linear below 0.5 ms. The Injector to injector deviation in a set goes up as well at those very short pulses.

All our XDI-2000cc injectors are matched at three different operating points to around 1% spread or less within a set for best cylinder deviation.
0.8ms / 20bar to represent idle
10.0ms / 100bar to represent static flow
6.0ms / 200bar to represent wide open throttle operation

EACH SET COMES WITH A DEDICATED DATASHEET WITH THESE FLOWDATA. With these data you can tune each cylinder to within 1%.
We recommend in our datasheet to never run less than 0.8 ms. To keep the pulse above 0.8msec you sometimes need to take the desired pressure down.

In every single log that we got back from customers with rough running issues, the commanded and actual DI pressure was at or above 2900psi, against our tuning recommendation. Our 2000cc injector has to fire so short that it barely opens at all, as a consequence it runs rough.
This is what the tuners and drivers have seen and complained about.

It took some time to find all the tables in the Honda ECU and get access.
There is a software function called CVO (controlled valve operation), that erratically sends the desired pressure up to 2900 psi at idle. This function has been causing the problem in most cases. The erratic nature made it so hard to find and verify.
CVO has to be turned off !

The Bottom Line

We were first to market with our 2000cc injectors, years before everybody else. It just took some time to find and test all settings.
Whatever our competitor has tested are not XDI parts. XDI-2000cc injectors run like stock if the latest settings are used. On Hondata, COBB and Motec.
Latest calibration guide is available here on our website:

So these are better than Hondata 2000 injectors ?
I don't think they're saying their injectors are better, just that they're clearing up misinformation surrounding their injectors. Hondata presented the injectors is such a way as to make it look like XDi's own are of a lower build quality and offer a less than ideal spray pattern.

what @AspecR said. We are not claiming better or worse here.
That's for a different plattform.
We are just clarifying the facts and educating the people.

We have been watching this for way too long. People started believing our spray pattern is bad without questioning anything. We had somebody say "I rather pay $600 more for a good spray pattern", where there is no proof at all that our or their spray pattern is "better" or "good". It is all just nice pictures that look impressive.

The very early testers had issues tuning our XDI-2000cc injectors.
Then our competitor posted "bad spray pattern" pictures and videos.
Then the people put 1 and 1 together and claim XDI injectors run bad because of the bad spray pattern.

Now some tuners still claim our XDI-2000cc are impossible to tune. Those guys have probably not tried our latest settings yet. That's why we published them here for everybody now.

Ive been tuning these 2000cc for over 4 years now on Hondata and I was the first to test the viability on OEM ecu. Even when it was listed as Motec only. I have found with proper tuning that it's the optimal solution for your fueling needs. Even the big 2500cc injectors work on Hondata and that says a lot. Don't worry your mpg isn't going to suffer. In order to get optimal mpg your SOI and fuel pressure tables need adjustment for each set up. Power is always the easy part, and these table adjustments should be done for each car. This goes for any injector upgrade. I have NOT experienced the rough idle issues. Not even since the very first car I did with them.
I know I don't post here a lot but I support companies that release a good product try to help support platform growth. I have tested many things that are now common practice and were considered not possible. Your mpg and drivability should NOT suffer. The most your mpg should change is 2-3mpg max. That small change is often due to driver behavior. No 2000cc will have a "stock" spray pattern.
Ive worked with XDI associates to help bring the 2000cc to Cobb also. I should mention I did not get paid in any way to help create tables for Cobb software. I am not sponsored and I am not paid to say any of this. In fact, I have refused to take money to review any product since I started my business. This way I can stay unbiased. I don't mind testing a product but I won't accept money and I have never asked for it either.
A good tuner can make these injectors shine. For those who dont know me, I am the owner of Fk8td and this is my unbiased opinion.

If you don't agree with my assessment that is your right but please keep it kind as there is too much negativity in the scene.

Thanks for reading,

Welcome to the forum!

I'm glad you are finally addressing this publicly because I've been watching this nonsense go on ever since their competition started making these claims.

It's amazing how fast rumors spread in this industry. All it takes is a competitor posting a few fancy pictures a couple tuner buddies repeating the same crap and suddenly everyone believes a product is garbage without seeing any actual real evidence.

I've sold plenty of XDI injectors and fuel pumps through SBX Performance and have gotten a ton of positive feedback from customers. 0 issues 0 returns and not just for this platform I have sold for a few others.

One thing I've learned is NOT EVERY TUNER KNOWS HOW TO PROPERLY TUNE 2000CC INJECTORS! They might think they do in their mind but in reality they dont.

I am not a tuner and will never be but its easy to spot.

Just because a tuner struggles to calibrate an injector doesn't automatically mean the injector is defective or has a terrible spray pattern. Maybe there's something they still need to learn but some people would rather blame the product than admit that.

And here's my biggest issue with this industry...

People are way too quick to believe whatever a competing company tells them without asking for actual proof!

I'm glad XDI is putting the information and updated calibration settings out there for everyone to see. Let the data do the talking!

Competition is GREAT for this industry. Misinformation ISN'T.

And one last thing! XDI has been nothing but great to deal with. Good people, great communication, and they actually stand behind their products. That goes a LONG way with me as a small business owner like me. It doesnt matter my order quanity they are always quick to respond and help out.

Trust, honesty and relationships still mean something!

I personally believe big private equity and corporate interests are going to hurt this industry if we keep letting marketing outweigh actual product knowledge and customer support.

thanks for the good words ! You spoke my mind.
I am not here to trash talk anybody, but you are totally right. There is a few tuners out there that just refused to listen and started bitching about the product right away. We didnt spend the effort to set things straight right away. Too busy building good parts :)
