I heard from a U.K. tuner the Milltek exhaust holds the power back at top end due to the restrictive rear silencer design. Disappointing.

good to know. you reminded me something I noticed about my milltek I had on my FK8, it had a similar flow issue due to the muffler. So maybe beyond stock power it won't be that great. I mention that only because of the vid I saw where it provided no gain or loss in power on the dyno for the FL5:

Milltek overall has a MUCH higher sound and material quality. We have sound clips on our YouTube channel if you’re interested.
They’re also 15% off right now. 👀

I have had the AWE Touring on my 2021 Type R for over a year now and have a few observations:

1. When it was first installed, I HATED it and nearly returned it. It droned horribly and just sounded like crap. Oddly enough after a month or so it mellowed out, doesn't drone, and sounds pretty good.

2. The center exhaust tip is the only one that actually functions, so exhaust soot only collects on that one. I clean it often so not a huge issue, just a little annoying.

3. Build quality is so-so, I am not a huge fan of slip fit exhausts -- mine has visible leaks at all connections.

If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't buy an AWE, I would probably go with the 27WON exhaust -- it is a true 3" exhaust and it uses V-Bands instead of slip fit joints.

I went ahead and purchased the milltek. Interested to see how it is.
Let me go ahead and tell you, holy was this a good purchase. I got the Milltek non-res, with a RV6 catted downpipe. As well as the Milltek valve controller, the sound is amazing. Wide open it is very loud with some drone, but its got pops & bangs and a very deep pleasing sound. When its closed, its way more reserved with basically 0 drone. I am actually so glad I went with this over the AWE, I wasn't sure how I felt about the valve but I'm in love with it and the controller. Best purchase I've made for my FL5 yet!

yeah, I need to get that controller also.

I have to admit, I am so confused still on how the oem valve works...like does it only open in sport and +R mode and only opens at certain rpms...
and does it open differently in +R compared to sport or is it the same? lol

Yeah man I am with you on the OEM valve, I have no clue, I know its suppose to open when you are at a certain rpm in +R I'm not too sure if its different in sport or not, to tell you the truth the valve controller IMO is a must have for this exhaust, or any valved exhaust for that matter. It does have a 3rd option for OEM style valve, it doesn't sound bad by any means but to tell you the truth I prefer just having it wide open or closed rather than the OEM style. I've only had it on the OEM once and I switched it back to open pretty quickly after.

I agree with all your points.

My exhaust came undone actually at one point and I had to go to a muffler shop to do some spot welds to hold it in place.

yeah, same experience I had on my AWE for the FK8...never understood why some people praised AWE so much. It looks like a rushed product lol.

Welds, type of material, etc doesn’t suggest a rushed job. Every product is build to make money. If the quality of any thing goes up, so does the price. Not equating it to fast fashion but somethings will last longer than others. Just a matter of fact.

It's clear that everyone's baseline for quality is different. There are folks in this thread claiming AWE quality is top notch and others stating the opposite, same for Milltek. If a high quality exhaust system is what you're after, maybe you pass on both and turn to the likes of Fujitsubo, Amuse, J's Racing, Spoon. Those outfits make high quality exhaust systems and I think most agree with that. And for those who disagree, their ability or willingness to pay is clouding their judgement. 🤣

yeah, haven't tried those, but my Remus seemed to be the best out of many exhausts I've tried.
