I am about to pull the trigger on a 25 in SGP. Just want some helping getting across the finish line. I have done about 10 or so track days when I owned my c7 z06/z07 corvette a few years back. One of the hangups for me with that car was the consumable cost. Between tires, track insurance, brakes pads, carbon discs, etc. It was crazy expensive. Not to mention the car itself. It became cheaper to sell the car when approaching a full brake job and just buy a new one. Had I stuck with it, I would have moved on to girodisc or something similar. Ultimately, I decided I didn't want to pour that kind of money into the hobby. Wound up selling the car and moved on with life. My daily driver is starting to get long in the tooth, and these new type R's caught my eye. I could daily it and do some more reasonable priced track days with it. I don't anticipate fully embracing the hobby for time reasons, but If I could scratch the itch a few times a year at HPDE and autoX why not! So the question, is this car going to meet those needs well, will the driving dynamics, be enough to overcome the comparatively less power to the z06? How do you enjoy dailying these? It has been decades since I last drove a FWD car, and never one geared toward performance. Is it for lack of a better term, fun?

Lastly, If using it as a daily (Living in the southeast. Occasional light snow maybe 2-3 times a year max, sometimes never) I likely would want to get a second set of wheels and tires. All Seasons. I have two options.

1. (What I am leaning toward.) Order the OEM Forged Wheels. Put the installed Michelins on them, run them in summer. Once they need to be replaced put some sort of extreme performance summer tire. Install the all seasons on the factory black rims.

Option 2. Order some track wheels and put somesort of summer rubber on them, run the all seasons on the OEM installed black ones.

Option 3. Cheap after market wheels for winter. Use OEM for summer perf tires.

I am going to do the illuminated Door Sills, Shift Knob, and considering the carbon spoiler.

However, this car will be outside a lot for long periods of time, when I travel for work. Are those spoilers prone to hazing when exposed to sun for long periods? Remaining with painted may be wise.

Last couple of questions. What is special about the "Premium Cabin Air Filter." Which justifies $105. How does the alcantara wheel hold up? Does it get matted down quickly? I am likely going to stick with the leather one. The rear window visor accessory, how does that work? I do have kids. If its easy to pop in and out, that may be nice for them. However, we won't be driving this car all that often with the full family. So probably not needed.

And lastly, it appears that these cars don't come with homelink. Which is a nuissance. How does the MyQ app integration work? Is it simple enough, or do you wind up having to dig through pages to open it, then click your button which sounds frustrating. Any better options? I have read of some people using a dimming mirror off the the integra or something which fixes both issues. May just do that.

Thanks in advance,

Nice to meet you all.

That’s a lot of questions 🤣

as far as the driving dynamics of a front wheel drive car, unless you are consistently drifting, used to swinging the tail out on a rear drive car, or constantly launching the car at lights or drag racing, you won’t notice it much. I drive an S2000 and FL5. I get the S2000 is 22 years old, but I prefer how the FL5 handles unless I’m looking to mess around and swing the car around. In that case, the rear drive S2000 is obviously better. The FL5 is not your average econo box FWD car. It’s quite literally the fastest FWD production car ever made, and you notice that when driving it. It handles very very well.

As far as power goes, a stock FL5 is to say the least, unimpressive. It’s quick, but if you are used to higher horsepower cars, like the Z06 you owned, the FL5 won’t impress you. If you’re willing to tune it and put some bolt ons (which will void your warranty) it does become noticeably quicker and much more fun in a straight line. It doesn’t cost much at all to tune and put simple bolt ons so definitely an option. Mine has just a tune and intake and it has made it much more enjoyable to drive over stock.

For what it’s worth, I’ve never heard of a premium cabin air filter but I also haven’t changed that on mine yet.

All the FL5’s I’ve seen come with the leather steering wheel. I think the alcantara is an option but I would pass. I had an alcantara steering wheel on a previous BMW I owned snd hated it.

The rear window visor slides into itself. You can have it expanded across the trunk and it clips into the passenger side. Or you can have it folded into itself and it’ll be out of your way.

Never used the home link or app so can’t comment.

As far as daily driving this car, it’s a fun car to drive and rewarding. However, at the end of the day, it’s a civic and has civic quality. It’s good don’t get me wrong, but I notice things like creaks and rattles that come and go. The engine is also unbalanced intentionally from Honda. Some like the natural vibrations and odd engine frequencies that come with that as they say it makes the car feel more alive. I personally could do without the extra vibrations and odd engine frequencies as it makes me constantly feel like something is wrong with the car 🤣. No matter how much people tell me it’s normal, I almost wish Honda just would have balanced the motor and sacrificed some power to get a smoother power delivery 🤷🏻‍♂️ that’s just me. Power can always be added aftermarket which is what most of us do anyway. The engine vibrations don’t feel natural to me like Honda wanted it to but again, that’s just me. Others don’t even notice them.

Just things to consider before buying this car, especially coming from a decently powered and C7 Z06

nothing on paper about this car really can capture what it feels like to drive it. when evo magazine had it amongst cars twice its cost and more, gt3's , mclarens, the testers routinely came back wanting to drive the Type R over the others because there is something about this car that is unique.

It's incredibly enjoyable because of the way it handles and the way you can rip through turns. I daily drive mine and it's very good for that purpose. im sure the fwd can handle snow fine w the right rubber. The back seat is actually very spacious and a child seat would be easy to deal with because the openings of the rear doors are very large.

It is a civic underneath, but the type R engineers were brought in for the development of the base FL5 civic and it really shows in the end product. All the things you touch, steering wheel thats a smaller circle like a go kart, the tight shifting, the sensitive throttle and the excellent brakes all feel very light and almost delicate but they are not.

There is nothing at this price range that can even come close to driver satisfaction. If you read the original reviews about the car they were all raving about its handling. They were not wrong, it is indeed a special car.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Going today to test drive it, and if all is well pull the trigger. Which month was the evo magazine article you are referencing?

The two things that I will comment on that maybe can help you out.

I would stay away from the OEM Illuminated side sills. They are extremely underwhelming and not at all worth the money. There is actually a thread dedicated to this topic: OEM+ Illuminated Door Sills - FL5 and Si | CivicXI - 11th Gen Civic Type R (FL5), Hybrid, Si Forum, News, Owners, Discussions . Maybe you can find a good aftermarket one.

As far as the MyQ goes, there is a kit to install a HomeLink mirror, here's a thread on this subject: though I heard that it potentially rattles: Plug and Play Homelink Mirror for FL5 -- 1 Hr Install | CivicXI - 11th Gen Civic Type R (FL5), Hybrid, Si Forum, News, Owners, Discussions .

So, you could try that route and do a mirror swap which isn't terrible to do, just not sure how the end result is. MyQ itself is integrated right into the apps so I don't think it's a lot of "digging" to get to the app. But personally, I haven't used it because I'm not willing to pay money for the service given when I pull into my driveway, I can just pullout my phone and use the free app... But they do have a 30-day free trial you can utilize to test it out.

Anyway, hope that helps! Good luck.

I pulled the trigger on my CW 25 type R a few days ago and picked it up yesterday. First manual car and it's insanely fun. The driving dynamics far supersede my highly modified 24 sport hatch by leaps and bounds.

Without answering your questions fully, I think this car is worth it purely for how well it drives.

I LOVE this car! It is a special vehicle and you soon realize it is purpose built for people who love to drive. The feedback is exceptional - steering input, brake feel, shifter and the most flat car I have ever driven when taking turns. Crazy how flat and firm this car holds its position on the road. I had an '03 M240I xdrive prior to the Type R. The M240i was faster from a dead start, but totally numb driving experience. The Type R puts a smile on my face every time get into the car. 3rd gear in the Type R pulls like a freight train.

Tires and other wear parts will be more expensive than a typical Civic as the Type R is built for the track. The tires bought from Honda as an OEM replacement part are cheaper than buying from TireRack.

Genuinely wowed by how little sway (if any) this car has had on turns. I ran a 26mm sway bar on my previous civic and that still swayed more than the stock type R. I audibly went "wow" when I took a turn at 40 and the car stayed perfectly flat

Well everyone, ya did it. Went and drove the car today, and what an absolutely fun car. It checked all the boxes. I can put my kids in it, fun to drive around. I think it's going to be the perfect daily driver for a while. Pulled the trigger. Just got it home, looking forward to taking the kids to school in it tomorrow. I will stick around the forum and look forward it!

Wish I had seen this before I had them installed. Haha, opened the door and it was a massive letdown. They totally phoned in this one. Should have been a factory installed non option. Tiny little thing with barely any light. For $500, a bit of a meh. Oh well.

Yeah….i mean at this point it’s there. Does suck though. Honda could have done a much better job designing such an expensive part.

My fav part about the car is def just daily driving. I love the interior and just in general how everything is displayed to you in the cab. Dash is amazing, infotainment is great, these things ruin most cars for me, its just not enjoyable being inside, Honda nailed that.

As for wheels I personally do not like the black rims on SGP, I have titanium or silver looking rims which look way nicer imo. However, do expect your wheels to get scratched, so I wouldnt spent 8k on them, but hey if you can afford, why not.

Get the Alcantara steering wheel.

Sure, it requires a bit more maintenance. Keep a brush in the door storage and brush it after you drive for a few seconds every now and then and it will be fine. That + a quick 10 minute Sonax cleaning session every 3 months and you should be just fine.

The car already feels special every time you get in it, but the Alcantara steering wheel is the single best thing iv done to the car to improve that experience.

I daily mine. It's perfect. Some don't like the bounciness of the suspension module, but I really like it. Once you get your seating position optimized and the steering wheel adjusted, driving the car is like being in a cockpit. Everything is exactly where it should be. If the bounciness of the suspension module bothers you over time, many have swapped it for the ITS module on the Integra. Easy swap and only about $200. More compliant ride, less bouncy. Best of luck!

I come from a bumpy built suspension on my 24 sport hatch. That thing was terrible, this car on its worst setting is miles better! Makes it feel like the carve out a path on the road
