So my windshield got cracked the other day and I'm currently fighting tooth and nail with my insurance (USAA). I'm obviously requesting OEM glass and parts but they said the only way they will cover enough for OEM is if there's no aftermarket option. Otherwise they'll only reimburse me the cost of aftermarket. I originally thought they'd be hard pressed to find one since from my research, the Type R has a different windshield (not sure how). Turns out they found one and it's the most generic aftermarket universal windshield they could find. This is it.

Anyone know if this aftermarket one is any good? Will the safety sensors still function properly?

I really want to go with OEM (my dealer already ordered the parts) but insurance is only willing to cover $500ish $2200 worth of glass, and $400ish for $700+ worth of labor. Meanwhile if I go through their network and go to some approved shop, all I gotta pay is my deductible.

What would you guys do? What is the primary difference between the Type R windshield and a normal one? And is that difference worth potentially paying out of pocket about 2 grand?

Depends on how it happened.
On one hand, if you are at fault, then I don't blame USAA for cheaping out on you.
It's all on you.

On the other hand, if you can prove someone else is at fault, then:

Wow. Just wow.
On both fronts.

1.) Over 2 Grand for a windshield? Shame on you, Honda.
2.) The lowest possible Temu "Type R Glass at Home" option from USAA? Shame on you, USAA.

Is this really how USAA treats US Service Members and Veterans?

I would demand nothing less than at least OEM or Corning Gorilla Glass quality, if it was me. Otherwise, maybe start looking for a better auto insurance company...
This makes me sad, although I've never used USAA for insurance myself, because
A.) I am a US Service Veteran, and
B.) USAA is headquartered in San Antonio, TX, where I currently live.

If all this is true, this is a sad day for Texas, and worse, for you.

I feel for you, brother.

Only advice I have is find out if you can get Gorilla Glass. I did it for my Wrangler. I paid out of pocket. It was under $600.00 ... but that was 2020, [redacted].

I hope the best for you.

Thanks man.

I was riding behind my buddy and his car has semi slicks. Sticky enough to fling a rock and crack it. It's filed as not being my fault, but I'm also not hitting up my buddy's insurance because it really isn't his fault either. If anything it's mine because I was riding too close to him.

USAA works strictly upon a "aftermarket first, OEM last" basis. The coverage itself is cheaper and better than AAA. But considering AAA prioritizes OEM first, I might have no business with USAA anymore. This is my first time ever having to deal with them like this.

Ahh, that's a tough one, then.
I've never had AAA or USAA for insurance.
Right now I have Farmers. Maybe I should ask if Farmers prioritizes OEM over Temu... uhhh, I mean, aftermarket glass, when it comes to replacements.

When I bought my used 2015 Wrangler in 2020, the OEM windshield was already cracked, so I opted for upgraded Corning Gorilla Glass when I paid out of pocket. I now feel like I got a really good deal there.

Also, there's no way I would throw my friend under the bus for accidentally flinging a pebble back onto my windshield, regardless of how close I may or may not have been driving behind him. I guess I shouldn't jump to be so hard on USAA for this one.

You sound like a good friend. Good lookin out.

I hope everything works out for the best.

Do they know you're out of California? I had to keep reminding my insurance any time I spoke with them. I had issues dealing with my insurance with a similar, but different issue with getting OEM vs aftermarket parts since there are certain options that are automatically included in CA where as other states you have to opt into the coverage.

If anything if you have comprehensive insurance I would go that route if they're not willing to budge and your deductible isn't too high.

Also, if you have to go aftermarket, its has be comparable to OEM and I dont think that generic windshield is comparable to the OEM version at least the Type R.

I had my windshield cracked on May 27 and have Mercury insurance. I opted to have my windshield replaced at the Honda dealer. It's true, the OEM FL5 glass is about $2200 and the standard Civic $900. I've looked at the glass in the standard Civic in the parking lot, they appear to be "Solar Glass Acoustic, Laminated x3" where the FL5 just says "Laminated". I'm not entirely sure, maybe the FL5 windshield is lighter and thinner without all the extra Solar, Acoustic and an additional Lamination x2 😅. The windshield was on backorder for 1.5 weeks, but had a small chip in the corner when they called me in to install it. So they had to order another one which I'm still waiting to this day. Still waiting but will get new OEM glass with new OEM moldings.

shijima_ending, I would argue with USAA that the Type R windshield is different than a standard Civic. That link to the windshield doesn't state Type R. My service advisor said Mercury didn't even argue when they gave the quote for OEM windshield and new moldings. Maybe there isn't an aftermarket windshield for our cars yet 🤷.

i fought with my insurance over the same thing. Said it was some Chinese brand on the paperwork but it says Pilkington on the glass and it seems higher quality that OEM....so who knows. This is on my Si. the OEM glass was extremely prone to pitting and looked awful after one year. The aftermarket one just seems better.

I think Piklington makes the OEM glass, at least on the FK8 they did

I had my windshield glass replaced with OEM, which was the only thing available at the time per the installer. The installer pointed out Honda OEM glass is made in China, and the Chinese Fuyao company manufactures glass in Ohio.

You had yours replaced with the OEM Type R windshield or standard Civic? Can you comfirm the windshield logos matches the OEM? Was your glass back ordered as well?

Are you going through comprehensive or is your home state not CA (I see your location is San Diego).

AFAIK, CA policies don't offer windshield coverage for USAA, with whom I am also insured.

USAA has a separate glass claims system. So technically this is not under comprehensive. Is this an error? I'm not sure if they know I'm based in CA.

Some updates. Spoke to a supervisor adjuster/auditor at USAA. I gave him reasons why the aftermarket windshield is comparable to a base Civic windshield, but NOT comparable to a Type R windshield. I cited that the Type R's windshield is lighter, non-acoustic, and lacks the IR blocking film or whatever.

The next step is for USAA to send that info over to some Safelite entity (USAA outsources not only windshield replacement/repair services, but also their claims processing services) to deem whether or not the aftermarket is comparable and meets the qualifications I listed. I hope they do their due diligence instead of saying "Type R is a Honda Civic so it's comparable"

My replacement OEM windshield part number ends in 79. It took the glass company 2-3 days to receive the windshield from Honda.
The glass company ordered the windshield based on the VIN and it was approved by insurance (Progressive). The tech had no issues removing, installing, and with camera recalibration.
