Seems to happen sometimes and I don't know why.
Almost always seems to happen at stoplight in traffic and never at stop signs on back roads.
Could it be due to setting in neutral at lights for minutes at a time, then the syncros getting confused or something?

I have this happen to me once in a while in my fk8….i have my transmission oil swapped out to Amsoil, and apparently GM synchromesh does not have the first gear lockout issue.

I never had the problem with stock fluid, even though I swapped that out at my first oil change.

I adjusted my clutch and changed fluid which has made everything much smoother. Ring AC Delco

In some respects, this can be considered normal if it only happens occasionally. I've experienced this with my previous BMW M3s, even when they were brand new. I would simply disengage and re-engage the clutch, which always resolved the issue. It was sporadic, and over time, I got so used to it that I barely noticed—it became an automatic response.

I'm sharing this because it's not something unique to the Type R; it can happen with other performance cars as well.

I think its just the synchros not aligned. I usually slightly rev the gas with the clutch in before engaging first to ensure the synchros aligned.

I've occasionally had that happen with every manual car I've owned and assume it's just bad luck from the synchros being misaligned.

Aside from what was already mentioned, you can also try pushing the clutch in a 2nd time, or shifting into second and back to first.

Never had 1st gear lockout although every once in awhile I would get reverse lockout until someone suggested simply row into any other gear and then to reverse and it will go in like butter.

How'd you get a GR Yaris in the US?

I haven’t, but I wish it were available in the US. I split my time between the US and Thailand, where I own the GR Yaris.

In the US, though, I prefer the Type R over the GR Corolla.
