So I got my car tinted a few days ago and noticed this when I got home.. I tried cleaning it with Sonax cleaner a few times with no improvement.. Then a buddy of mine mentioned it looks burnt.. So now i'm thinking the tint guy must of burnt it with a blow dryer while doing tint.. What's your guy's thoughts?
I have to go back anyways, so just thinking of how I need to phrase it to ask about it.. Also, i'm assuming it's apart of the whole door panel, it doesn't appear it will just pop off by itself. Thanks guys

That piece would have to be removable. They can’t manufacture something like this with padding, wrapped fabric, and stitching in one piece. It’s an assembly. I imagine you will have to take the whole inner door panel off to remove the padded portion of the armrest, however.

That really sucks, but is fixable one way or another.

Have the tint shop make it right
That's the biggest hurdle to overcome. Unless it's clear and in the moment, it's difficult to get them to cop to it after the fact. It turns into a "he said, she said". I don't care if it appears extreme, but I photograph and video the car when I drop it off. I also walk them through the car and let them know I'm meticulous about my vehicles and there's no scratches or damage to speak of. If they take issue with that, I'll go somewhere else. Simple.

An honest and non-accusatory statement that the armrest wasn’t marred before the tinting and that you didn’t see it until afterwards followed by the question, “How do think this happened? “ If they are honorable and take responsibility then great. If they hedge and cast the blame upon you then say, “In my honest opinion it had to happen here, but I can’t do future business with a shop lacking integrity.” Pause a moment to gauge their response and if it’s not acceptable just walk out.

if for some reason you can't get it resolved, might be a good opportunity to upgrade the armrests with high quality alcantara with cushion for your elbow. Just refreshed my FK8 interior OEM+ style. Not sure about the FL5, but the FK8 door armrest wear out and have no cushion.

Good to know, I was searching for anything aftermarket, couldn't find anything though.

I'm no expert, but i have dealt with damage on material.

Those kind of shiny marks on fibrous material are typically from:
- oils
- rubbing
- heat
- chemicals

those look like fingerprint type of contact, so that would point more toward oils or chemicals.

the best way to know is to take a very bright light and high magnification and see if the fibres are still there. If so, how they are compromised? Discoloration would indicate oils and chemicals. the main difference between oils and chemicals is that chemicals can cause the fibres to distort, while oils will just lay them down.

rubbing damage could come from fingers, but they would have had the car too short a time for that to be logical.

if those patches are totally bare of fibres, then it could be a chemical burn or a heat burn. Look for beading of the fibres -- little beads where the fibres would have been. the workers prob would have had something on their gloves or had an applicator/nozzle/etc brush the console. I would think that heat from a heat gun would have spread the heat in a much more broad pattern.

again... not an expert, but those are places to start when identifying the damage.

Of course he didn’t do it… I will have to look into getting a new one or redone.

I got my FK8 stock alcantara wheel (didn't like how it was wearing) replaced with a leather wheel done by Sweidit (can be found by the same name on FB or IG), he's a cool guy and does good work with alcantara and leather. Just request what you want and he'll do it. I believe he's a one-man operation, so he can get busy at times. I also just put in an order for a pair of console boomerang wings (FK8), a pair of front door armrests with cushion, and a pair of rear door armrests with cushion - all in matching black alcantara with red stitching. He's also working on rear seat covers (black alcantara with red accents) which I may consider if the covers actually look like they're part of the seat. The other popular option I've heard is Overland, but I've never dealt with them.

Your car is brand new. Just get ahold of the dealership and order a new arm rest. This will ensure the fabric and everything matches as it should…otherwise you could open an unintentional can of worms with slightly mismatched materials/stitching. I know I wouldn’t want to deal with that.

That's true as well.. I don't need a bunch of stuff mismatching.. It might look good in black leather with red stitching though..That would at least match the boot and steering wheel..Still thinking about what the best option is.
