I just found out Michelin works with manufacturers to custom spec the Pilot Sport 4S. The exact variant developed with Honda for the FL5 Type R is: Pilot Sport 4S DT1 (for different tread 1). Your Discount Tire or Tire Rank replacement may be a generic PS4S not optimized for FWD FL5.

So, if you want the tire developed to optimize the performance and handling of your front wheel drive Type R Get the PS4S DT1 variant. I found the marking on my tire by the manufacturing date code (4625 in the photo)

The walls look different as well. I bought 1 at tire rack and had it mounted and looked different.

The trick is buying from Honda to get the best pricing which hopefully is still a thing. I'm sure you get the DT1 when you get the factory part number.

Honda dealers use Tire Rack to source their dealer ordered tires..My Conti DWS 06+ came in at $133 discount over standard pricing. I can't use PS4 because I live where the temps get way below the operating temp range of PS4 tires.

BigO (west coast chain) asked what car I had and ordered the specific PS4 part number. They had several PS4's to chose from.

I’ve used a bunch of the DT1 and generic PS4S. The only advantage I’ve found with DT1 and the only reason I kept using them was the price direct from Honda.

As a street tire, all PS4S are good. For track, they overheat and fall apart. If you don’t have proper negative camber on the fronts they’re useless on track. If you setup properly for them, you still have to manage temps or the tread will come off in chunks.

My as fitted, from factory, ps4 tires on my FL5 were completely shot at 5000 miles of driving on West Virginia paved goat paths..I would not fit another set on a bet..They had chunks missing, edge of tire missing tread, worn perfectly even across the entire tread, but ragged and worthless at 5000 miles..The Conti DWS-06 I replaced them with went 15000 miles..I am on my third set of tires in 21000 miles..no track days..just paved goat paths. and, as a direct comparison, my first set of DWS-06 were 265/35/19..they made the car feel much more stable than the 265/30/19 that are fitted now.

Did you drive the PS4S in cold weather?

Interwebs says the normal PS4S temp range is 40-100F : “below 40F traction drops dramatically as rubber hardens (hockey puck effect)”

doesn’t sound like a good idea😎

Yeah, I ask because I feel like I've seen post about peoples' OEM PS4S falling apart and then it got traced back to when they drove in cold temps.
Mine fall apart with the opposite condition: overheating on track. Tread blocks come off in chunks.

I did not..I did not take the PS4 out if the temp was less than 50 deg F. I have a Subaru for inclement weather work..It has 283000 miles on it..a 2004 Outback auto box. It runs as new.
