The manual calls for the cross method. I periodically check the tread depth and when there’s a difference of 1-2 mm I’ll rotate them.

Do as the manual states, but usually for fwd it is either. I've always just done front to back on fwd during 5k oil changes (maintenance minder), but if your route has a lot of turns in one direction or one side is out of alignment, then maybe cross would be beneficial (but I'd want to see that in the tire wear and fix the toe). If you have directional tires front to back only.
