hello. I am attempting to narrow down my brake situation.

I will be swapping to Castrol SRF brake fluid, and also want to update the brake pads.

The car sees mostly slow driving through city/suburban streets throughout the year. I take it to the gym, grocery shopping, etc.

additionally, I will take it to the local autocross around 2times a year, and 1-2 HPDE events. I’m very much a novice and am learning to utilize my brakes a little more now, on the threshold of ABS instead of being timid.

Two questions:

1. do I need titanium pad shims?
2. Which combination of Paragon pads should I get? Just R3 front? R3 all around? R5 front + R3 rear?

thank you for the help!

1- no but they are nice to have
2- can't comment on the R3 but the R5s squeel like nothing I have heard before, also make sure you bed em VERY well. R3 will be quieter and could be fine for track (depends on what track, level of driver, ect...)

There are tons of other pads so I would look around and see what else might work for you. I say this as someone who did not like the R5s at all but I know some people do like em

I'd recommend skipping Paragon and shims all together.

Grab a set of the CSG CPB for Front and CP Rear. Will handle everything you throw at it as a novice and more -- https://www.counterspacegarage.com/csg-spec-brake-pads

I torture tested them on track for a number of track days, and they held up perfectly, and while being extra nice on the street. Only hybrid pad I recommend.

I like my EBC SR11. I know they are not the popular choice, but easy bedding, low-ish noise at very low speeds, and not too expensive. I'm planning on ordering another set. Very similar driving, although I do more HPDE vs. autox.

I like the SR11s too. Cheap, long lasting, not more dust than OEM, no bedding (this is huge), not very loud on the street.

While I don't doubt those CSG pads probably work great, getting novices to spend $780 on pads is quite a lot...
Easy enough to skip the rears. The fronts work just fine with full OEM rear as well. The advantage is a better pad, with better control and modulation, that in turn makes it easier to learn on.

Do you have to bed in the CSG pads?

I have bought a set of the R3s for front and rear. What's the procedure to bed in the brake pads? The last time I got pads that needed bedding it there were instructions included with the package.

I'll try the CSG or EBC pads next. I've heard nothing but only good things about CSG

The CPs for the front are pre-burnished/bedded -- but CPs really didn't need anything in the first place.

Many of CSG's compounds are coming pre-burnished now -- you can see them denoted with a "B" at the end of the compound. It' makes them pretty turn key. I just sent it with the C1XB's.

Don't you still need to bed in the pad material to the rotors? Its not just the pad itself needs burnishing no?

Yes, but it's a vastly quicker and simpler procedure -- aka you can basically accomplish it on your out lap and go...or a couple quick stops on the street.

Absolutely, when people say no bedding you still have to put a friction later in the disc but trust me when I say with for example the SR11s its almost instant, after applying the brakes you got brakes almost immediately vs other pads that the first few times you brake its hella sketchy

I have titanium shims and Paragon R3s on the front. The R3s squeal more than any other pad I have had, some of which were more aggressive compounds. Honestly am on the fence about reverting to the OEM pads as it is embarrassingly loud.
