I’m glad the camera angle/distance is conservative. I kind of ignored it a few days ago, because I had a feeling it was a bit “off” especially with the fish eye view. My previous car, of nearly 14 years, didn’t have a back-up camera and I had never backed into anything before, except maybe a low snow drift or two. This is to say I’m confident in my (un-assisted) parking skills and depth perception. Anyway…so, after parking, I got out and checked to see how close the car actually was to curb. My center tail pipe was literally just 1 inch away from smashing into said curb!😳 The lesson learned here : I will definitely not ignore the backup camera again. I was spooked enough by this near miss experience that I will always heed the camera’s fish eyed help from now on.
But how close did it show on the screen?

Fisheye, normal, or top down view, when it shows nearly touching something, mine is consistently 12" away.

I believe if I would’ve stopped, while the top edge of the curb was still fully in view (versus continuing to slowly back up) this very likely would’ve equated to the car stopping ~10”to 12” away from said curb (in fish eye mode).

The camera is crappy compared to others, and I can also park without it. But that’s not the point of the thread. I just was curious if my car behaved normally or not. I measured today. When my bumper’s edge shows as just touching something I’m backing up against, when I get out to look, there are 12 inches of space. Seems large for a margin of safety, so I was simply curious what other FL5 owners saw, and if 12 inches is what it is, or if mine is off somehow.
I just checked mine and used a painted line parking spot to test it. Lined the camera line up with the painted parking spot line and got out to check. Yes, it’s about 10” of space between the rear of the car to the line so it is being conservative

The FL5 back-up camera is pretty distorted, even in the normal view. It's normal operation that the bumper cover view is actually about a foot further than you actually are.

On my old 20 accord touring it was spot on. My new 23 civic touring is as posted above. Way to much of a "safety cushion" IMO.

Good question - is it camera or soft/hardware (infotainment stack)? Cameras are easy to find and probably not too hard to swap out. I was a bit disappointed by the quality too especially after looking at some other new cars with seemingly HD quality. The jump from my wife's '13 Si is sad, and that one wasn't good for its day either!

I don't have a type R. I have a 16 Ext, (original owner). My backup camera is spot on... No problems at all..... If I was you I'd take that car in for repairs, replacement of the camera.... Good luck..
