Steering not returning to center smoothly, notchy- long sweeping turns

I had my steering rack replaced at 18k miles due to the sticky steering issue. Had the recall done at 55k miles.

The issue is, on long sweeping turns, I can feel the rack trying to yank the wheel back to center when I'm just holding it in place.

it feels very notchy when it does this an unnatural. It's really making me lose confidence when turning. It's also felt pretty loose since having the recall done. I really regret getting the recall done. It fucked up my rack and Honda wants over $4000 to replace it again.

Of course, it's very intermittent, so when I can bring it to the dealer, I won't be able to replicate the issue so it will not be covered under any warranty.

i feel like it's applying pressure at the moment or there's too much internal play. Is there a way to reset the torque sensor or recalibrate it?

Mine felt like this before the recall and gradually got worse. Especially during mid corner the feed back would change and doesn’t create confidence

It sure seems like enough people are having issues with their steering, both pre and post recall fix. Maybe it’s time for a class action lawsuit to get them to fix it permanently?

I know that this is probably a dumb question, but is it possible that the lane keep assist is on and causing your issue?

I know that this is probably a dumb question, but is it possible that the lane keep assist is on and causing your issue?
lane keep assist is always off. but i remember i accidentally turned it on a couple months ago and had to fight it to switch lanes. hopefully that doesn't damage anything.

just an update: issue has gone away. I heard a bad phone cable was causing the issue for someone else on FB. Got a new one. Not sure if that was it, but issue is gone.

either that, or sway bar binding or something.

Bad phone cable? Do you mean the USB cable connecting your smartphone? If that effects the steering, I hate modern tech more than I thought!

yea, that's what the guy said. sounds crazy, but it did seem like an electrical issue.

One of the reasons I hesitated on buying a CT4-V Blackwing was a bunch of owners reported that their cars would just randomly shut off while driving. The one thing most of them had in common was that they had some device plugged into the OBD port, either an insurance tracker, or some kind of tuner. Your issue sounds similar, though much weirder being just a USB device.

interesting. I had a OBD bluetooth scanner plugged in too when this issue would pop up! almost feels like it was causing lag from all the sensor data is was requesting.

UPDATE:

i highly suggest NOT getting the recall done unless your steering is binding. and, even then, you probably really need a new rack.

great recall Honda...sure glad i bought an extended warranty.

Honda should be paying for the new rack. Not my aftermarket warranty.

i have an Si but i imagine the racks suffer from the same problem.

just got my car back with the updated rack. A15. Steering feels MUCH tighter. Feels brand new again and all the slop is gone. Real glad I had it replaced.

and the issue with the steering tugging on long sweeping turns is gone as well.

How does my alignment look?

I'm having similar issues, went to dealer, told me "extra grease from the recall might have changed the feel a bit, that's normal. tech took it on a test drive, steering felt normal to him."

surprisingly, they didn't give me any trouble. they just said they agreed that it has slop.

this time it was out of warranty (second steering rack replacement. first one at 18k miles), but had an aftermarket warranty, so had to get them to approve it. which they did. glad i bought one.
