In 40 years of Honda ownership, I've always tightened the OEM filters until I feel the metal surfaces kiss. This is less than a full turn after the rubber gasket touches. Zero issues in well over 100 oil changes. Only works with OEM style filters.

During your 40 years of Honda ownership, the OP asked about a filter tool so he could tighten to the spec.

He didn't say "hey guys I want to torque my oil filter properly, could you tell me over and over again how you don't torque anything that has a torque spec because you've always done it that way?"

You all just can't stop yourselves with the unsolicited bad advice, can you?

Not bad advice.

Torque spec on a rubber surface isn't accurate. Gasket crush is very temperature dependent. Lubrication also matters. Twisting 3/4's of a turn is better advice.

I had some not good oil filter issues on VW's many years ago due to temperature extremes (-30 to 90 degF). Gushed Arco Graphite oil on my father-in-laws new concrete driveway, among other times.

Torque to a ft-lb value is a spec. Twist by turn is also a spec printed on the can. We aren't saying he's wrong for wanting to, but he clearly needs more information than most of us have because we don't have the tool. Someone said it's fine. It's like $30, he can buy it and find out. But as long as he's asking, most of us use the other "spec". And some use their grandpa's "spec".

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'll buy the OEM tool, as it seems to be the one people say works.

I don't want to tighten the filter by hand. It doesn't make sense. Why would I when I can use a tool?

With our cars though, it's pretty hard to do because of the limited space.

I am all about torque values myself though but oil filters I always just twist by hand until they stop turning. They always come out easy too because you can't over torque by hand from experience.

Welp, found the skinny kid.

"if it's tight it's tight" is literally why we have torque specs, because my gorilla tight is different than some skinny kid's kind-of-tight.

I used to break a lot of stuff for no reason when I was young. I repent.

I own like four torque wrenches and a torque screwdriver now.

Like twenty years ago, I have a distinct memory of a Ford Ranger that required about four hours to extract the oil filter from. I was trying to figure out what a**hole would do such a thing, and then I remembered...
