What type of hybrid systems did those cars have? I think the issue is that the current technology Honda has for hybrids prevents them from chucking a manual transmission in since adding arbitrary "gears" to a motor would miss the whole point of having motors. At that point just make it behave like the current CVTs with paddle shifters.Original Insight's and Civic hybrids were available with manual transmissions.
The problem for automakers is they can't easily program drivers of manuals (per close relative in the auto industry), so it is harder to meet EPA targets. On hybrid eCVT cars, there's a lot of pre-programmed computing between your right foot and actual acceleration.
