Hey everyone!

I'm thinking about getting the standard Kuro turbo for my FL5 as I would like to get a little more top end pull without sacrificing the stock bottom/midrange too much and I'm not really interested in doing ethanol blends. I've been researching it and it seems some people have run this turbo with the stock fuel system with good results and others say you need to upgrade the HPFP at the bare minimum if not injectors also. I understand the turbo can make upper 400's for horsepower on ethanol blends and you would certainly need to upgrade both of those components to get max power out of the turbo while doing that, but my personal goal is just to be right around 400 or so on 93 only and I think that will keep the turbo in a very efficient and unstressed state. I think going more than that will just be too much for a FWD car also, especially one that I plan on doing autocross and track days with.

Anyways, I was curious if anyone who installed this turbo and had it custom tuned on the completely stock fuel system would be willing to share their Flashpro data logs of 3rd or 4th gear WOT pulls that I could take a look at and see how everything looks. It could be pulls from on a dyno or on the street, just specify which if you don't mind. I would also love to see any from someone that has upgraded just the HPFP as well to compare to. Bonus points if the same person went through tuning it on the stock fuel system and then upgraded the HPFP later as that would be really awesome to see the data from both setups on the same car. And if you don't mind, please list any other power related mods (DP, FP, IC, Etc.) that were done as well so I can keep that in mind.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share some data!

Why don't you want to do an ethanol blend? Sounds like you're goals are super achievable on the stock turbo, and potentially the stock fuel system. You may actually keep some reliability keeping things stock, just so long as you're doing supporting mods right. Also a turbo alone doesn't warrant new fueling, that's determined by your tune.

It's pollyannish to think a stock turbo FL5 will see ~400whp on pump gas. The best bolt ons on offer won't get you there. You need about 100whp over stock. The only way this happens is if you're on a high reading dyno, sub freezing ambient temps, and/or you have a ringer.

Agreed. There are a lot of people that think 400whp is easily achievable with the stock turbo when it's actually not. And even if you do get there with ethanol, you are absolutely wringing the stock turbo's neck out to do it which I would think would be detrimental to long term durability. When using an upgraded turbo it won't be working so hard to do so and will likely live a much happier life. No different than if you kept the car on the stock turbo with the stock tune, it will live forever like that because it is well inside it's efficiency range even though it's capable of producing a lot more power. Just because something is capable of reaching a certain power level at it's absolute peak doesn't mean that's the best solution.

Because I don't won't to have to rely on being able to get to a gas station with E85 to have the power of the tune/parts that I paid for. I already went that route with my Accord 2.0 and I would rather just upgrade the turbo with my Type R and be able to go where ever I want to get gas and not mess with calculations and mixing. And honestly, it's actually cheaper to just upgrade the turbo, so long as that's all you're doing.

HPFP - $2K
Injectors - $1,500
CANFlex - $600
Total - $4,100

Kuro Turbo - $2,200

I used the Kuro for a bit def not best up top and your fine with OEM turbo don’t waste your money if that’s your HP goal.
Interesting that you thought it doesn't do great up top which is the opposite of other peoples experience that I've seen, I appreciate your input on that. I might end up sticking to the stock turbo but that's kinda what I'm trying to decide. I'm just toying with the idea and I would really like to see some data as I love geeking out on stuff like that. But I don't think a lot of people save a lot of data logs like I do and try to learn all the in's and outs of it so it might be something I just have to do myself. We'll see if anyone has anything they are willing to share...

if you want up top get RV6 turbo. The base Kuro is low/mid quick spool. Will never beat the RV6 up top. Honestly you get to 400 and want more and more lol take your time lots of hidden data our there

It's pollyannish
Big word bub, feel bigger than me 😡😡😡

Jokes aside, I'm basing my naive take on imwtuneds various posts, a lot of non-upgrades turbo FL5s and de5s are pushing 380-400 on his dyno charts. Op also never mentioned whp, so I assumed

I know op said no e85 (and like you said too about pump gas), but one of his latest posts explicitly says 96hp over stock gain with a splash of ethanol, canflex and an intercooler. Assuming 315 crank, that means definitely over 400 at the crank.

Fair enough, running e85 can definitely be a pain. You wouldnt need injectors or a hpfp to hit your goal though. Look over at some tuners posts and what they say, just a quick glance at imwtuneds page shows there's plenty of cars with just a little ethanol getting to that 400whp area. With proper supporting mods you could hit that easily.

Huh? Where did you get this from? I didn't say any of that other than I don't want to use E85. Maybe you meant someone else? But yes, I was talking about over 400whp. No one is taking the engine out and slapping it on an engine dyno to measure crank HP so I assumed wheel HP was a given. My bad for not specifying.

I've looked through his posts extensively as well as reached out to him on the subject as he tuned my Accord and is currently tuning my FL5 on the stock turbo. I was actually going to go the ethanol route originally but he said he did not recommend running flex without a fuel system upgrade which adds significant cost and the more I thought about it, the less I felt like messing with that again anyways.

I appreciate the reply's so far, but this post isn't about what kind of mods to do, it's about seeing data logs with the Kuro turbo on pump 93 with the stock fuel system and/or an upgraded HPFP. I know there are several ways to increase power as I've researched pretty much all of them. Hopefully someone will chime in with some data but if not, that's ok. This is all for fun as I love tinkering and learning about tuning.

I was referring to one of Derricks most recent posts on that top half.

And that's news to me since he has posts of FL5s pushing higher numbers without the an upgraded fuel system. Everything is custom so it could just be what you wanted specifically was better if it had more fuel. Again Id trust a tuner over any advice you get here.

Regardless, a new turbo itself is cheaper, but running more boost means hotter, means probably good idea to make cooling better. At the end of the day canflex and a tune is the most widely recommended beginner tuning option for a reason.

Your specific request for kuro+hpfp alone is probably gonna be hard to come by with logs. I know if I did a fuel system upgrade it would be everything at once.

Ah, gotcha. That makes way more sense. lol

I agree, he has tuned multiple cars without an upgraded fuel system with what appears to be good results, which is why I found it interesting that he doesn't recommend actually doing that. My assumption is that people mod their cars how they want and then he does the best he can with whatever it is they have. I don't think he is turning anyone away just because they don't follow or know his preference or recommendations for parts.

I know finding someone with the Kuro and HPFP only would be a rare thing, but it would be cool if someone out there did do that. I know lots of people have the Kuro with the stock fuel system, it's just a matter of whether or not they will see this, actually have some data logs saved, and be willing to share them with me.

Also, here's a couple of examples of what he has said. One from a comment I made on someone else's post on Facebook, and one from an email directly from him when we first started talking about parts to use, what I was going to use the car for, etc. I forgot that his response was to using flex with 91 octane as that is what I am limited to here in AZ at the moment, but I doubt that would change once I move and have access to 93 again.

Email Quote -

"You can certainly use ethanol if you want, but you will operate on razor-thin margins for the maximum output available when confined to the stock fuel system... especially when your base fuel is ACN91 (which tends to require a richer mixture to avoid knock, taxing the system harder natively).

There's absolutely gains to be had from ethanol use instead of just the low quality 91; but I strongly suggest installing an upgraded high pressure fuel pump at the very least to make it worthwhile with the least headaches and highest level of reliability."
