I attended the Touge2Track event at Streets of Willow this past weekend. It was a unique midnight track session that ran from 4 PM to 10 AM. Conditions were tough at 98°F heat with 25 to 30 mph winds.

I was initially worried about how the FL5 would hold up, especially with the high temps and strong headwinds pushing the car back on the straights and unsettling it in the corners. Normally, it would’ve overheated in this kind of weather.

Surprisingly, it didn’t. The highest oil temp I saw was 245°F, which is a big win considering the circumstances. I think the tune, E85, upgraded turbo, pro tune, and undercarriage venting really made a difference. I’m running a dedicated track map that detunes the car to around 400whp just for reliability.

I didn’t participate at the very end of the session, even though some of the corners had lights. The tighter sections of the track were completely dark, and it felt like you were driving blind through those areas. I still wanted to drive my car home in one piece. I saw an MR2 with a broken rear bumper and a right-hand drive S14 Silvia with a tire that looked like it had popped off the wheel. I saw them trying to fix it using a big flathead screwdriver to pop it back on.

Willow Springs is shutting down for two months while the new owner repaves it, so I’ll likely hit another track in the meantime.

Also, I spoke with a guy running an FK8 who built a custom cooling setup. He managed to keep his oil temps around 200°F in the same weather. It looks like he added an extra radiator, which I’m seriously considering doing next.

Here are a few pics from the event.

This was the highest temperature the car reached that day.
Recorded peak temperature for the day, already below the prior max logged value. Additional reduction is expected with the installation of the auxiliary radiator and a custom fabricated air duct for the dual oil cooler.

Finally got the WOT PWR triple-pass radiator and transmission oil cooler installed. Everything looks solid so far. The transmission oil cooler looks huge . I’m excited to put it to the test on track. Also, I’ve got my old PWR radiator for sale if anyone’s interested.

Awesome build! Are you planning to add a lip with your build?

im thinking about getting the Racebreed front splitter (blackfriday sale), but I don’t know if it’ll survive my track days or my steep driveway 😅. Socal roads are sketchy sometimes, random debris, dips, and I could easily crack it going somewhere I’m not familiar with. A lot of tuner shops have steep entrances too, so that makes me hesitant.

I agree, around orange the steeps varies a lot and some cities are just not lowered car friendly. I wanted a nice lip that will go well with the spoon crane wing but I also cant count how many times i thanked my project aero lip for the meantime.

tuner shop that can't accommodate a race car? red flag bro lol
chewerks and the jsr plaza entrance have some pretty crazy bumps. i know chewerks moved, so maybe the new spot is better now, but still.

i’m sure a lot of people can angle their car just right and avoid scraping, but i already scrape with only an inch drop and no front splitter. i do my best to go super slow and angle in/out, but honestly that alone stresses me out lol.

i’ve also had bad luck before. i cracked the mugen front bumper on my old rsx-s, and same thing happened on my old s2k mugen front bumper. sometimes you just end up on a bad road or a place with a huge speed bump, deep dip, or steep gas station/shop entrance.

if you drive canyons like angeles crest, you already know… sometimes there are random rocks in the middle of the road and that’s all it takes to mess up a front splitter. buttonwillow track can destroy a front splitter too.

for me, there are just too many unknowns when i drive in public.

eventually it’ll probably happen anyway, especially since i probably won’t be driving this car around as much now because my wife is already complaining about how bumpy it is.

It’s been 5 months since I’ve had the FL5 on track, so it felt a little weird being back out there for the first time this year. I was just happy to get back to the track and chase some supercars. Between the 3 year old discounted TireRack clearance tires and 21mph winds. I wasn't setting any records, but the main goal was just getting the car home in one piece.
The Phearable tune and stock turbo are actually faster for this track. My current tune is pretty conservative, the torque band doesn't really kick in until 4k RPM, which is safer for the internals but the turbo lag is rough for track driving. I’ll probably need a retune sometime this year.
Check out the videos and pics. No more overheating issues. I’m usually one of the last guys off the track now since the oil and brakes can handle a full session. It took 2 years to fix this problems. Next plan is to snag a front splitter around black friday sales.
