I don’t care which YouTuber drives/owns what car, whatsoever, but the FL5 is the better car if you dont need AWD.
Generic gearbox shifting, flat Recaros and the boost lag that is ‘so endearing’ aren’t traits I look for in a sporty car. Also, you can only stare at those analog gauges for so long, before you put your eyes back on the roadway. 2018 Subaru tech inside the cabin is meh

the Boxer engine always has a nice sound vs. inline 4, yet three diffs add weight quickly. FL5 hatchback is super practical vs that STI sedan.
I disagree with Joe in that the FL5 is less fun to drive in the city, if it is not wrung out. The RA is no ‘more’ fun to drive slowly (IMO).

I’m pretty sure 50yr old Joe only kept the RA due to exclusivity.
I think he just ran out of room for his twinkies.

Funny how the YouTuber car lifecycle works. This is what these guys do, it's part of the model. Every new car is “absolutely incredible, best daily ever, no material gripes” for a short period of time…right up until it’s time to make room for the next sponsor-friendly or engagement boon thumbnail. Then suddenly there’s a “fatal flaw” they “can’t live with” that somehow never came up in the glowing 15-video honeymoon phase.

Nothing against the hustle, but let’s be real: this isn’t long-term ownership insight, it’s content rotation with a plot twist. If your car develops a deal-breaker every time the algorithm gets bored, maybe the problem isn’t the car.

This is why you can't trust most of the auto youtubers seriously. Engagement is king for them

The article claims the FL5 Civic Type R gets a facelift around September 2026.

Supposed changes: Google built in infotainment, revised front and rear bumpers for better cooling and aero, full LED rear turn signals, heated seats standard in Japan, USB C, and Auto Brake Hold memory.

HRC details: a new Type R HRC grade based on the Tokyo Auto Salon HRC Concept, with more aggressive aero, carbon parts (roof and hood), forged wheels, titanium exhaust, and extra cooling like a bigger intercooler and added oil cooler. It would be very limited, likely lottery only, and priced way higher than the standard car.

January 22, FL5’s in the news: 2026 FL5 updates and FL5 HRC Edition – Article found on Car Repo Japan website for the “Latest Automotive Information”

Note: I do not know how accurate the information is on this site so take it with a grain of salt. I’m guessing that this article was written with a great deal of speculation. This information was directed towards the Japanese market. The article does not list a source for this information so I would remain a bit skeptical.

Honda's new Civic Type R minor change to be released in September 2026

Honda's high-performance Civic Type R is finally getting its first major facelift. The new model, scheduled for release in September 2026, will not only be an improvement, but will also boast major advancements, including the latest connected technology and the addition of a new grade, the Type R HRC.

This article provides a comprehensive explanation of the minor change to the Civic Type R, based on information sent to Honda dealers and the official announcement from Honda of America. It provides all the information you need to know if you're considering purchasing one, from the end of production of the current model to pricing and equipment changes.

Background of minor changes and release date

The Honda Civic Type R (FL5) has been overwhelmingly popular with sports car fans around the world since it underwent a full model change in 2022. It has been revealed that the current model will undergo its first major minor change in 2026.

According to a notice sent to Honda dealers, the final sale of the current model will be the Racing Black Package for the "third wave of pre-orders," which is scheduled for delivery by around July 2026, after which the model will be completely replaced by the minor change version. The minor change version is scheduled for release in September 2026, and an official Honda USA news release also states that "the Civic Type R will receive updates in 2026, including interior and exterior styling changes."

Civic Type R HRC Concept

Interestingly, the model that will be the base for the minor change version has already been unveiled in advance as the "Civic Type R HRC Concept" at Tokyo Auto Salon 2026. Disguised with special aero parts and camouflage wrapping, it was initially thought to be a special concept car, but in fact this model was the minor change version.

The exterior design of the minor change version of the Civic Type R is not just about changes to appearance, but also about improving functionality. Of particular note are the revamped front and rear bumpers. The area and shape of the cooling openings in the front bumper have been revised, greatly improving the efficiency of airflow to the radiator and intercooler. This is a result of the cooling know-how gained in the race field during the development of the HRC model, which will be discussed later, being fed back into the standard model.

The rear bumper also has a slightly tweaked diffuser shape, which is expected to further improve stability at high speeds. Combined with the large rear wing that continues to be used on the current model, this will further enhance downforce performance when driving on a circuit.

In addition, the adoption of a wider bumper achieves both cooling and aerodynamic performance to ensure stable high performance. These improvements further enhance the Civic Type R's tradition of setting new records for front-wheel drive vehicles on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Full LED lighting and improved quality

One area where many owners of the current model have expressed dissatisfaction is the bulb specification of the rear turn signals. Even though it is a flagship sports car priced at over 5 million yen, there have been signs of cost reductions in this area, but the minor change version will finally be fully LED. There will also be minor changes to the decoration inside the headlight unit and the design of the daytime running lights, which are expected to give it a sharper presence at night.

Furthermore, paint quality upgrades are planned. The highly durable, highly pigmented paint technology used on the higher grades of the Civic RS and e:HEV will also be applied to the Type R, improving the durability of the front end, which is prone to stone chips, and carbon fiber parts, which are susceptible to deterioration due to ultraviolet rays.

Interior and connected features innovation

Google built-in – The biggest topic in the interior of the minor change version of the Civic Type R is the revamped infotainment system, which will transition from the conventional Honda CONNECT display to a new generation system equipped with "Google built-in."

With this new system, Google Maps functions as a navigation system using only the in-car communication module, without the need to connect a smartphone. It also supports Google Assistant, which allows you to make calls, send emails, play music, and adjust the temperature in your car by simply saying "OK Google" while keeping your eyes on the road and your hands on the steering wheel. Additionally, Google Maps supports voice control and provides real-time traffic information to help you quickly reach your next destination, while Google Play allows you to use familiar apps such as music, podcasts, and audiobooks in your car.

The major advantage of this system is that it always has the latest map data and can provide highly accurate traffic congestion avoidance route guidance, just like a smartphone navigation system. However, in order to use Google's services, you may need to subscribe to Honda's Connected Services (for a fee). Also, since the entire system is integrated into Google, it's important to note that switching to an aftermarket navigation system will be more difficult than ever before.

Heated seats, which have been equipped on North American models since the beginning, are finally being made standard on Japanese models. While some hard-line voices say that "comfort features are unnecessary for the sake of weight reduction," this change will likely be welcomed by many users when considering the actual usage environment of owners (commuting and winter driving). The weight increase is slight, but the added comfort more than makes up for it.

Additionally, the USB port around the center console will be changed from the conventional Type-A to Type-C. In line with the charging standards of recent smartphones and tablets, it is expected to become a high-output type that supports PD (Power Delivery), allowing for quick charging in a short time.

A memory function for the Auto Brake Hold (ABH) will also be added, a subtle improvement that will dramatically reduce everyday stress. In the current model, this function resets to OFF every time the engine is started, but now it will remember the previous setting. Not only does this save you the trouble of having to press a button every time, but it also reduces one operation step when starting, which is a major benefit for manual vehicles.

Continuing from the current model, the 10.2-inch full digital meter is used. In addition to the standard display, the meter design also features a special design for "+R" mode, with the focus being on how quickly the driver can recognize the information they need when driving on a circuit. The upper part displays engine speed, rev indicator, gear position, etc., while the lower part is a multi-information display, allowing vehicle information to be displayed as desired.

The infotainment system also comes standard with Honda LogR, a data logger app specifically designed for the Type R. It supports the Performance Monitor, which displays the G-meter and other instruments, Auto Score, which scores acceleration, deceleration, and cornering while driving on public roads, and Data Log, which allows logging and time measurement at 13 compatible circuits in Japan. A speed limiter release function is also available for compatible circuits, and a smartphone app can be used to combine onboard footage taken with a smartphone with vehicle data while driving.

Powertrain and driving performance

The minor change version of the Civic Type R will be equipped with the same 2.0L inline 4-cylinder VTEC turbo engine "K20C" as the current model. Maximum output is 330 horsepower, maximum torque is 42.8 kgm (420 Nm), and the basic specifications are expected to be carried over from the current model.

The engine, which has been improved from 320 horsepower in the previous model (FK8 type) to 330 horsepower in the current model, employs a newly developed mono-scroll turbocharger that is smaller, lighter and has improved rotational response, thereby increasing power and torque and achieving sharp acceleration characteristics. In the minor change version, the tuning of the engine control map and throttle response has been revised, and it is expected that the "perceived speed" and "ease of handling" that cannot be expressed in numbers will be improved.

Compliance with 2026 Noise Regulation Phase 3

The biggest challenge with this minor change is compliance with the United Nations Regulation UN-R51-03 Phase 3 (Noise Regulations), which will come into effect from July 2026 (and some parts from September 2026). These regulations are strict, lowering the standard value for acceleration noise tests by several dB from Phase 2, and pose a major obstacle for high-performance sports cars.

What's particularly troublesome is that "external noise" includes not only engine exhaust noise but also tire road noise. High-grip tires like the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and Cup 2 tires fitted to the Civic Type R provide excellent grip, but they also tend to produce louder friction noise (pattern noise) with the road surface.

According to interview information, Honda's policy is to "maintain power while pushing the limits of sound control and tire balance." However, changes to the tire compound (rubber material) and pattern cannot be denied, and there is a risk that the "absolute grip" will be slightly reduced compared to the current model. This is an important point to keep in mind for users who prioritize circuit driving.

Introducing the new grade "Civic Type R HRC"

The launch of an HRC branded production vehicle is significant

Civic Type R HRC Concept

The biggest attraction of the 2026 model, and likely to become a collector's item in automotive history, is the Civic Type R HRC. Unveiled as the HRC Concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026, this vehicle is considered a development vehicle intended for commercial release.

HRC (Honda Racing Corporation) is originally an organization that oversees racing activities such as F1 and MotoGP. The fact that HRC is directly involved in the development of a production car and is using its own brand name on it is a strong statement of intent to create a "road-going version of a race car" as a brand to rival Toyota's "GR" and Nissan's "NISMO."

Dedicated aero parts and weight reduction

The Civic Type R HRC features aero parts with a more aggressive style than the base model, improving driving performance, and special accents add to its individuality. A large carbon fiber rear wing and a larger front under spoiler provide powerful downforce when driving on a circuit.

In addition, the adoption of a carbon bonnet and roof has lowered the center of gravity and reduced the yaw moment of inertia, forged aluminum wheels (specially designed) have reduced unsprung weight, and a titanium exhaust system has been used to reduce weight, all while pursuing a sensual sound within regulations.

Improved cooling performance and race-ready

The installation of a large-capacity intercooler and additional oil cooler strengthens the management of intake air and oil temperatures, making it possible to complete continuous laps on the circuit in summer. This truly embodies HRC's philosophy of "bringing technology cultivated in races to public roads."

Limited release and price forecast

The previous FK8's final model, the "Limited Edition," was a hotly contested title all over the world, and sold out in an instant in Japan. This HRC model is sure to be a similarly limited edition, or even more so. The Japanese domestic market is likely to be in the hundreds (estimated at 200-600 units), and will not be sold to the general public; instead, it will be sold by a strict lottery.

As for the price, some say that while the standard model is becoming more expensive, the HRC model uses a lot of carbon parts and special equipment, so it would not be surprising if it were priced at 8.5 million to 9 million yen. Even so, it is expected to have value and demand that will cause it to sell out immediately.

Price predictions and purchasing strategies

Understanding Japanese spec prices from US prices

The already announced US price for the 2026 model is $48,090 (equivalent to approximately 7.3 million yen), an increase of more than $4,000 from the initial release price. In Japan, the current model has been strategically sold at a bargain price of 4,997,300 yen (tax included), but given the rising cost of materials, the weak yen, the addition of new features from Google and others, and price consistency with the Prelude, it is no longer possible to maintain this price.

The "Racing Black Package," a special edition model introduced in 2025, has been revised in price from the original 5,998,300 yen to 6,179,800 yen. The standard model of the minor change will be priced based on the "Racing Black Package" to address rising raw material prices, and is expected to be priced at around 6.2 million yen. Most people in the industry believe that even the standard model will be priced between 5.9 million and 6.4 million yen.

Possibility of resuming orders and lottery sales

The resumption of orders for the minor change model (or more accurately, the start of new orders) is expected to be around September 2026. The sales method will most likely be a "lottery" like the current model.

When the current model was released, it immediately received orders for several years' worth of orders, and orders were stopped at an unprecedented speed. Since then, the official website has always displayed the words "Orders suspended," and dealers have also responded that they "don't know when they will resume." Even for the minor change version, it is expected that orders will be drawn by a manufacturer-sponsored online lottery or by each dealer lottery.

Some dealers are said to give priority to "good customers who have previously purchased a Type R and continue to drive it without reselling it" when negotiating (this is not publicly stated, but it is common knowledge in sales). If you are considering purchasing one, it is important to meet with the dealer's sales representative now and express your enthusiasm that "when the minor change version comes out, you will definitely want it."

Minor change version - main specs summary

Below are the expected specifications for the 2026 minor change version of the Civic Type R.

We have ranked the improvements made to the minor change version of the Civic Type R in order of how much attention we think users are paying to them.

No. 1: Latest connected features with Google built-in

Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play can be used with just the in-car communication module, without connecting a smartphone. The fact that the latest map data is always available and highly accurate congestion avoidance route guidance is possible, just like on a smartphone navigation system, is a major advantage in everyday use. The convenience of being able to perform various operations just by saying "OK Google" far exceeds the standards required for modern cars.

2nd place: Addition of new grade "TYPE R HRC"

The arrival of a production vehicle bearing the HRC (Honda Racing Corporation) brand is a historic event for Honda fans. The car incorporates a generous amount of technology cultivated through racing, including weight reduction through carbon fiber parts, improved aerodynamic performance through special aero parts, and enhanced cooling performance. It is expected to be sold in extremely limited quantities, making it an extremely valuable collector's item.

3rd place: Redesigned front and rear bumpers and improved aerodynamic performance

The area and shape of the cooling openings have been revised, significantly improving the efficiency of airflow to the radiator and intercooler. The shape of the rear bumper diffuser has also been fine-tuned, further improving stability at high speeds. This evolution, which not only changes the appearance but also improves functionality, embodies the Type R's "lean design philosophy."

4th place: Seat heaters as standard equipment

Heated seats, which have been included in North American models since the beginning, are now finally standard on the Japanese model. This improvement will greatly improve comfort, especially when considering commuting and winter driving. Some people say, "We don't need comfort features just to save weight," but the weight increase is minimal, and the benefits in everyday use are immeasurable.

5th place: Complete LED rear turn signals

The bulb-type rear turn signals, which many owners of the current model have complained about, have finally been fully converted to LED. This achieves a quality befitting a flagship sports car priced at over 5 million yen, and gives the car a sharper presence at night. The decoration inside the headlight unit and the design of the daytime running lights have also been slightly changed, and you can feel the high level of perfection that has been refined down to the smallest detail.

No. 6: Auto Brake Hold (ABH) memory function

In the current model, the auto brake hold function resets to OFF every time the engine is started, but now it remembers the previous setting. Not only does this save you the trouble of having to press a button every time, but it also reduces one operation step when starting, which is a huge benefit for manual cars. It's a subtle improvement that will drastically reduce everyday stress.

No. 7: Complete transition to USB Type-C

The USB port around the center console will be changed from the conventional Type-A to Type-C. It is expected to be a high-output type that supports PD (Power Delivery), allowing for quick charging. This is a modern feature that matches the charging standards of recent smartphones and tablets.

The challenge of complying with 2026 noise regulations

The biggest restriction on this minor change is the United Nations Regulation UN-R51-03 Phase 3 (Noise Regulations), which will come into effect from July 2026 (and some parts from September 2026). This regulation is strict, lowering the regulation value for acceleration noise tests by several dB from Phase 2, and will be a major obstacle for high-performance sports cars.

Because sound energy is calculated logarithmically, a 3dB reduction requires halving the sound energy. Even for a high-performance vehicle with a high power-to-mass ratio like the Civic Type R, the requirements for Phase 3 are extremely strict.

To clear the regulations, Honda will be forced to make the ultimate choice: either make the muffler quieter and sacrifice engine exhaust efficiency, or reduce tire grip and switch to quieter tires. According to sources, Honda's policy is to "maintain power while pushing the limits of sound control and tire balance," but there is no denying the risk that the tire compound and pattern will be changed, resulting in a slight decrease in "absolute grip" compared to the current model.

Some experts point out that there is a possibility that the current model will sound better or achieve better times on the circuit, which could be a factor supporting the popularity of the current model in the used car market.

Acura Integra Type S minor change and possibility of introduction in Japan

Honda's American-exclusive brand, the Acura Integra Type S, will also undergo its first minor change in 2026, just like the Civic Type R (FL5), according to an official news release from Honda USA.

The Acura Integra Type S is a sister car to the Civic Type R, equipped with the same K20C engine and offering the same performance output. Until now, it has been a North American market exclusive model, but it is highly likely that a minor change version will be introduced in Japan.

Honda USA's official news release states that "the high-performance model Integra Type S has been improved both inside and out," indicating that it will certainly receive the same updates as the Civic Type R. There is a strong sense of nostalgia for the Integra brand in the Japanese market, and if it is officially introduced, it will undoubtedly be a big topic of conversation.

Summary: Will the 2026 Civic Type R be the last pure gasoline Type R?

The 2026 Civic Type R facelift isn't just an improvement, but the beginning of the final chapter in the story of the "pure gasoline engine Type R." With the latest connected features powered by Google Built-in, the addition of a special model bearing the HRC brand, a new design that combines aerodynamic and cooling performance, and enhanced comfort features such as standard heated seats, the product reaches a new height of perfection.

On the other hand, there are strict restrictions to comply with Phase 3 noise regulations coming into effect in 2026, and it has been pointed out that there may be subtle differences in tire grip and engine sound compared to the current model. Prices are expected to rise significantly from the current model's 4,997,300 yen, to 6.2 million yen for the standard model and 8.5 million to 9 million yen for the HRC model.

Still, with the wave of electrification sweeping across the country, the chances of any more internal combustion sports cars being released are close to zero, and it's unlikely that prices will fall significantly in terms of rarity and asset value. If you're considering buying one, it's important to start building relationships with dealers now and prepare for the resumption of orders (lottery sales), which is expected around September 2026.

The Civic Type R is packed with Honda's technology and attention to detail. The minor change version not only maintains its title as the fastest front-wheel drive vehicle, but also combines the latest connected technology and comfortable features, making it the ultimate sports car. We'll continue to keep an eye on the next generation of Honda sports cars.

I would like to see a subtle color match around the ‘eyelids’ of the headlights, similar to what the standard Civic got in 2025.

Update, I think the entire post above is B.S. Here is how I believe so
  1. It claims North American Type R's already have standard heated seats. False
  2. It claims it will gain Type C ports with PD. The current refreshed Civics with Type C ports do not support PD, only 15w. The Type A port on the Type R is 12W.

I wonder if the September timeframe is for Japan and not the US? Maybe the US will get it sooner? Especially since the US already announced pricing and Japan hasn’t

Found this after doing some googling today: https://www.hondainfocenter.com/-/m...Type-R/8-PDFs/2026-Civic-Type-R-Features.ashx

Seems like no changes from 2025 :/ So I guess refresh probably isn't coming till 2027 model year?
Agreed !
it seems every year there are claims of refreshes and it doesn’t happen.
I think it will eventually but not a refresh but a total platform up revamp maybe even a hybrid.
I hope it doesn’t happen it takes away from the heritage and soul of the Type R.
Although I think us current FL5 owners will prosper having the last of the true Type R’s it would still make me sad to see those kind of changes.
