Can someone please provide insight into using an oil catch can? Im FBO with an upgraded turbo and have been advised that it's recommended. Is it worth the $200, or should I continue running my car without one?
Helps prevents excessive oil coking in the intake tract, which is common on some direct injected engines. German cars are known for this problem. Honda reportedly less so.
From what I've read theres really no consesus. In theory it should help but I've seen guys say that they only collected a minimal amount of oil despite having FBO.
I wouldnt stress about it tbh. I have a GT350 and its well known that you'll need an oil catch can (it even says so in the owners manual)
There isn't evidence out there that Honda earthdream engines have problems related to gunk in the intake valves.
You might find one or two cases but in general there is no proof.
These engines are over 10yrs old, if there was a real issue forums and social media outlets should be plagued with posts about it.
If you plan on keeping the car long term imo totally worth the small investment. I have only driven mine 3k km, had oil catch can from day one. Emptied today to just see whatās in it. Mainly oil; about 1-2cm, hard to tell with naked eye but there was some tiny deposits on the bottom. Again, I didnāt test it, just what I saw with my own eyes.
