Service Intervals

I have looked over this forum and not been able to find anything like this yet. I’ve seen some of this from Honda dealers as well, but a lot of them contradict or just apply to the “chill” daily drivers. Although most of this may be common knowledge, I still wanted the general maintenance information for our FE1’s on here.

Engine oil change: 5000 miles
Engine air filter: clean/change @15k
Transmission fluid change: 30k miles
Coolant flush: 30k miles
Brake flush/bleed: 30k or as needed
Spark plugs: 100k
Valve clearance check/adjust: 100k

Most of these intervals occur a little earlier than Honda’s recommendations (they say the engine oil lasts 7500), but doing it earlier is a personal preference of mine. Let me know if you have any other recommendations or suggestions.

Brake fluid should be changed about every 30k miles or every 3 years.

Spark plugs changed at 30k is very early. Honda’s recommendation for my old 8th gen Si was 90k miles iirc. Certainly the OEM spark plugs in the FE1 are as good or better than those used 15 years ago. Going from memory, they were Denso Iridium plugs.

That’s right! Spark plugs and valve adjustment was at 105k (not 90k) on my 8th gen too…which is the FIRST scheduled mechanical maintenance interval. All service intervals leading up to 105k were basically just fluid changes. Obviously, some maintenance details may be different with the 1.5T, but maybe not as much as one would think.

I check my air filter every time I change my oil. Mine is already filthy at just under 6k miles.

Honda UK owners manuals have traditional mileage/elapsed time maintenance charts for CTR's and others. I'll be following this, except engine oil changes every 5k miles.
Also note 5W-30 oil is okay.

Thanks for adding the link- and yes a heavier oil seems to help out. I’ve been running Motul 5w-40 since my first oil change, it really quieted down all the top end chatter these cars seem to come with.

I change my oil on the ‘21 CTR when my onboard computer says 10% service life left. I just did the third oil/filter change and my car with only has 6500 total miles. I’m not sure why so often with so few miles?

More aggressive driving styles (track events, spirited street driving, high rpms in general) will wear down your oil life much quicker than the normal wear that a typical civic owner will do. The oil life reminder really just refers to the driver who uses their Honda to take the kids to school and buy bread at the grocery store.

I don’t drive it very often and certainly not hard or spiritedly so maybe it is due to oil dilution over time? Does that sound reasonable?

no, the ecu doesn't know if you have oil dilution. maybe you do a lot of short trips.

I say also depends on how hard you drive the car.

Drive the car hard/track, more oil changes, brake fluid every year, transmission oil also a bit sooner, etc.

It has all the math calculated in the main computer of the car for you. All we have to do is change it when it tells us to now.
