I’ve heard the AWE in person and it sounds pretty good from the outside. That said, I’m very happy with the MXP, which is like a copy of the APEXi with an added Helmholtz. Flanged stainless steel 3” and one of the cheapest options, although I haven’t seen more than one or two running it.

Compared to the 2.5” Borla on my Focus ST, which is also a 2.0 turbo albeit quite different, the MXP is deep, drone is quiet off-throttle and controlled on light throttle, burbles less but it sounds better at WoT.

Cheers

Thanks for your reply but I have to ask the obvious. If you disliked it so much why did you keep buying it? Must of been something about the exhaust you really liked I would think ?
man i worded that terribly 😂. in particular on the fk8, it drones horribly (esp low rpm and when cruising in 6th, its almost unbearable). on the GR it wasnt nearly as bad but it still had drone at 2500ish rpm (this system has the “updated” drone technology so maybe thats why). as far as on my golf rs, not really many options at a solid price point thats comparible and it wasnt as noticeable compared to the other cars. hope this clarification helps!

Sounds like you are a glutton for punishment. :p
shit i used to run j’s racing 70rr on my s2k / fg2 si so maybe i am 😂

That J's Racing 70RR was known to be an ear bleeder. Reminds of me of those Buddy Club exhausts from back in the day. You take it to redline a few times in a B-series or early K-series (K20A2/Z1) and your ears were ringing!

I've had the AWE touring since early 2024 and it sounds great. If you want it quieter, keep the stock DP. In my opinion, this setup is what the car should sound like stock and it's really not that loud.

I am running the TSP downpipe with mine and it's a bit louder but it's perfect IMO. The car has much more character now especially with the type s pops and bangs, but isn't so loud that it upsets the neighbors. I have had multiple compliments on the sound of this setup at the track, which is surprising since most people don't think these cars sound good.

My Complaints with the AWE Touring:
  • Welds don't look nice if you care about that. Most people shouldn't care about this IMO.
  • Slip joints will loosen over time and could come apart. I track my car which makes this worse, I had to adjust them and re-tighten about every other track day. I fixed it by adding tension springs to 2 of the joints and welding the center joint together. No more issues but probably not something most people want to do with their $1800 exhaust.
  • The clearance to the axle is a bit tight on the front pipe. I am not sure if this was just the early versions, they may have fixed this by now. The DP could be partially responsible for this condition, but not 100% sure.
  • It's heavy. I ended up making some Titanium tips to replace the massive tips that come with it and that alone saved like 4 lbs.

Part of me wants to try the remark Ti but since I really like the sound of the AWE touring, it likely isn't something I'm going to do. I also am not a huge fan of the dual tip design and prefer the triple tips on the AWE.

Great feedback I really appreciate it and will consider all with my decision.
Thank you

I wanted to share the below link I came across recently that made me think of this thread. I understand this may be viewed as a "one off" and not necessarily representative of the AWE product; however, this is not an isolated quirk either. Enough people have reported fitment, quality, customer service issues, or abnormal noises from this exhaust to make you stop and think about it. FWIW, no one is complaining about their HKS or A'PEXi exhaust. When I buy something, I expect it to work as intended. I shouldn't have to weld, constantly adjust, or Jerry rig to get it to work properly. The concept of having to modify what should be a finished product doesn't make sense to me, ever. I suppose it depends on your risk tolerance for these types of things and clearly there are people who don't think these things are a big deal.

Interesting, when I get to my car later today I’m gonna try and flick it like that and see if I can get it to rattle. Never heard that before!

One guy on there said the exhaust hangers were too long so that may be the root cause. If it’s actually an AWE problem I hope they addressed it.

I’ll post here later when I find out.

EDIT: I have some free time at work cause it's a slow day for the holiday, so I went out to my car to look at it. Was bored I'll admit LOL.

Anyway, I didn't smack it like the guy in the reddit post did but in his video it shakes considerably....So tried to move it at first and see if I could get it to wiggle, which I could not. I'm interested in in his follow-up to see what the root cause was here. For his exhaust to physically shake that much makes me think something is up with the hanger rubber mount because it shouldn't even move if you've hung it correctly I would think.

I'm not attempting to discredit the post by the way, I'm just genuinely shocked that it is shaking that bad for him and I'm pushing/pulling on mine pretty hard and can barely get it to move. Check out my clip below for comparison, I guess. But considering mine was 1 year ago and his is now, who knows if the manufacturing process changed. I'd be impressed if AWE could mess up that bad!

AWE Touring and TSP Dowpipe for over a year. No issues and it's loud enough. Anything louder would be annoying.

Yeah that shaky exhaust is def an outlier. No manufacturing line is perfect and I am sure certain flaws sneak through but I would be pissed if my exhaust moved around like that.

I have to tell you even with the slightest chance this could happen I sadly might have to mark AWE off my list. Seems like it would have been the perfect sound I was looking for to . The last thing I want to do is get under my car every few months and tighten everything up or be one of the few that end up with a rattle that would drive me nuts especially after spending that kind of money. I do think because it appears for what ever reasons “ I’m guessing sound”AWE is very popular and more folks are buying them over other options could be why your hearing of a handle of issues. I’m sure other manufacturers have some not so happy customers also but you don’t hear about it as much with limited numbers sold.
Now I have to take a step back and think is it really worth it to open Up a can of worms. I have no worries now with my stock exhaust other then it’s super quiet. I was ready to pull the trigger on one yesterday but a delay in the action and all the input I’m getting I might have to reconsider .

My track buddy was running awe exhaust and got it because price is reasonable for the appearance of quality. He brought it to the track and it kept getting loose even after bringing it to different exhaust shops. Ultimately we ended up spot welding it and it did the trick.

I have another shitty freeway video on my Instagram shamless plug #razorcrestfl_5.
Only thing is when it's cold it has a weird trombone sound at about 3k but that's prob one of the pipes not seated quite right then it expands and goes away it's really not a bad drone on touring but I'm in the camp of loving it
