Got my black R 2 weeks ago.
Was wondering what oil filter you guys use? In another forum most people say OEM and yet in another one most dislike Hondas OEM filter.
Any opinions on Hengst or Wix?

I use OEM, no reason to use some fancy filter if I'm replacing them every oil change
Mainly asking because Hondas seems to let larger particles pass and has less efficiency... assuming the AI response is accurate (micron rating that specifies it filters out at least 70% of particles 30 microns and larger, and 85% of particles 40 microns and larger).
Most other brands have a 20 micron rating. Wondering if these test are done the same way because that's a pretty good difference

The oem filter is trash. To be fair all oem filters suck (canister ones at least)

the better U filter. The worse your flow. The better your flow. The worse U filter.

the Honda hamp filter is superior but at that price there’s a fuck ton of third party filters that are better than the hamp. And way cheaper too. I’d jump on YouTube. Find the filter that has the balance between filtration and flow U gel with most.

I prefer OEM Honda filters:
1. I like the o-ring seal (vs. flat gasket)
2. The flats fit my socket wrench (aftermarket filters vary some)
3. And no risk to the warranty

I've never had a problem with Honda filters. I've had issues with aftermarket filters falling apart inside, leaking past flat gaskets, and drain-back valves not working.

My understanding (see below) is that the Honda OEM oil filter is just a re-labeled lower-end Honeywell-Fram filter.

I use Fram ultra synthetic oil filter (XG7317), which based on my research is one of the best filters out there, 99.7% efficiency @ 20 micron, highest dirt holding capacity, silicone valve. which makes it better than Mobil, Wix, Bosch, Purolator.

and further research seems to indicate that newer next gen Fram FE7317 (which is a Walmart-exclusive) might be even better (spec wise), higher flow, higher bypass valve, more dirt holding.

Amsoil is 99% efficient at 20 microns.
M1 is 99% efficient at 30 micros.

Per their websites.

If AI is correct and these are the Honda OEM filter specs, that's a significant difference
Filters out at least 70% of particles 30 microns and larger, and 85% of particles 40 microns and larger

Hmm interesting because I've heard from alot of people that FRAM is garbage now. Unfamiliar with Honda but on the Subaru side I basically asked the same question for my BRZ and alot of people were saying FRAM used to be good

The Honda filter’s media is not synthetic like some fram filters. And to my knowledge. The amsoil filter is the best filtering period. However their flow isn’t great. For a daily that gets pushed hard occasionally. You’d want a good balance between flow and filtering. Two things the Honda filter is terrible at

Where does the WIX XP come into play with this?

In terms of its balance between filtration and flow. It’s good. It is not great but it is good

I personally run the wix xp.

regular wix, can’t recommend. It’s better than the stock filter. But not by much.

someone above mentioned AI, so FWIW I asked Grok 4 Expert to research and rate:

Based on ISO 4548-12 lab tests from independent sources like Ascent Filtration Testing and manufacturer data sheets, I ranked the top oil filters compatible with your FL5 Civic Type R's K20C1 engine. These focus on filtration efficiency (higher % better), particle size filtered (lower microns better), dirt holding capacity (higher grams better), oil flow (lower pressure drop or higher GPM better), and bypass valve pressure (balanced to avoid early bypass but protect during spikes). I prioritized filters with validated data over claims, ignoring user opinions or forums. All are direct fits to the OEM 15400-PLM-A02 spec.

Filter ModelFiltration EfficiencyParticle Size FilteredDirt Holding CapacityOil Flow (at ~30 LPM or rated)Bypass Valve Pressure
FRAM Synthetic Endurance FE731799% (ISO 4548-12)>20 microns~25-35 gramsLow restriction (~5 psid drop)11-17 PSI
FRAM Ultra Synthetic XG731799.96% (ISO 4548-12)>20 microns (effective to 10 microns)13.6 grams9-11 GPM (~5.23 psid drop)8-11 PSI
AMSOIL EA15K2098.7% (ISO 4548-12)>20 microns (effective to 15 microns)High (superior to standard)Low restriction12-16 PSI
Bosch Premium 332399% (ISO 4548-12)>20 microns14 gramsGood flow8-11 PSI
Royal Purple 10-286799.08% (ISO 4548-12)>25 microns10.1 grams~8.84 psid drop14-18 PSI
Mobil 1 M1-110A99.6%>25 microns28 gramsHigh flow12-15 PSI
K&N HP-1010High (lab-tested)>10 micronsHighHigh flow rates8-12 PSI
WIX 57356XP61.61% (ISO 4548-12)>21 microns18.1 grams9-11 GPM (~4.98 psid drop)8-11 PSI
Purolator Boss PBL1461061.8% (ISO 4548-12)>30 microns12.5 gramsHigh flow (~6.82 psid drop)14-18 PSI
Mann HU618xHigh (manufacturer)>20 micronsHighLow restriction12-16 PSI
Honda OEM (Honeywell FRAM)98%>25-30 micronsGoodMaximizes flow8-12 PSI

The FRAM FE7317 ranks highest overall for your setup—it excels in efficiency and capacity to trap fines from spirited driving without restricting flow in heat, reducing turbo and bearing wear. Pair with 0W-20 synthetic for best results.

I dunno about all the data but I know for a fact, amsoil filters flow like shit and aren’t preferred in Motorsports due to that. They do filter very well tho

no offense to anyone here. I love their oil but not a fan of their oil filters myself for my car.

I wonder if anything else there was wrong
