Another oil temperature question!

I also used the search function, and I know this topic has come up before. One of the previous threads mentioned the oil cooler option. I daily drive my car, so adding an oil cooler isn’t a big priority for me.

I was also on the Hondata forum, but I got banned—my fault. I made a comment that if they offer the Hondata Complete package, they should also provide better app support and consider adding oil temperature to the CarPlay option like on LogR. It was my mistake to ask or imply that, but it is what it is.

Anyway, I found a guy who will make me a 3D-printed heater vent gauge pod for the 10th gen and told me he was willing to make one for the 11th gen. I had another local guy who made them for the 10th gen, but he wasn’t willing to do anything for the 11th gen. As soon as I have everything ready and he gives me the link, I’ll post it here in case anyone is interested.

I found the complete ECU pinout, but I will not be posting pictures here for safety reasons since it contains all the pins for everything on the car. I know the temperatures on these cars are determined by algorithms, and I have yet to find a dedicated oil temperature connection.

I also know people add oil coolers and use oil filter sandwich adapters, but I don’t trust them because of potential leaks. I know many will say they’ve never had problems, but I’m still hesitant. I saw a member—either here or on the 10th gen forum—who used an STM Oil Pan Drain Plug with a 1/8” NPT temperature sensor provision (M14x1.50). However, I feel like that could create a future leak point with constant drain plug removal.

I’ve looked for other spots on the engine, but I can’t find any. Maybe I’m overthinking this, but I just want to be able to monitor my oil temperature. In my previous car, I had no issues adding the AEM X-Series gauge, which I plan to use again.

I tried to lay out everything as clearly as possible to see if someone can help me out.

The hondata forums remind me of the stack exchange forums when I'd go and ask for help on coding problems in college and immediately get banned. ie: lotsa Great info, tons of asshats that police the forums

Bottom line any way you do it will introduce a potential new leak point. The drain plug would be the easiest option for temp.

If you decide to also monitor oil pressure, the Wunderladen oil pressure sensor housing is the best bet.

I have had the 10th gen gauge pod mounts and will be interested to see what your guy comes up with for the 11th gen. Hopefully something like this...

The guy I talk to does similar ones. I took pictures of the pitch and yaw angles and sent him a vent so he can develop it. From our conversation, I gathered that he can do multiple ones on the same spot using the same base. At the moment, I am mainly interested in the temperature because Hondata shows the pressure. I’ll see if anything else comes up.

I have the P3 gauge, but it can’t be used together with the Hondata. I didn’t know that when I bought it. Basically, Hondata has had a monopoly on the tuning market for this chassis—at least until a couple of months ago when Cobb showed up. But they’re just as irresponsible as Hondata in how they handle business.

I understand that getting bombarded with questions like mine can be exhausting, but why offer the service in the first place if it can’t deliver? Anyway, that’s beside the point. I bought the Hondata because it was the only option at the time that allowed tuning the ECU with any mods I had.

I’ll keep everyone posted on what route I take and what options I explore. I just want these companies that charge an arm and a leg to at least be competitive and committed. Instead, it feels like we dress up a Civic Sport and get charged as if we own a Type R, while most companies offer low-quality service or products.

Maybe I’m just being old and grumpy. Someone will probably tell me this is standard practice and that I should just roll with it. But when you’re paying $50k for a car and over $1k for parts, I think it’s reasonable to expect better from companies that want our business.

For now, I’ll try a different route. I’ll set up an external gauge and use the other ones with the Hondata. Sorry for the rant—it’s just frustrating that people and companies behave this way.

I don't really have any experience here, but just thinking out loud. Is it possible to connect an oil temp and oil pressure sensor to the car and have that data read through the OBD2 port? If so, can we use our phones to display the info?

Some of my friends autox and they use Solostorm/Circuitstorm to collect data. They run the app through their phones or tablets to display the info, something similar to the LogR (sadly nothing for iphones).

I would follow this template from the CivicX forum. Use a hollow drain plug to place a sensor in. Get the wiring in the car somehow. For a clean look hook it to a P3 Gauge as pictured above.

Note: The LogR oil temperature isn't a real reading. It's interpolated via coolant temperature and oil pressure. If you switch from 0W20 it isn't accurate anymore.

Hondata is the absolute worst if you ever need support.

I’m updating this post because I think I’ve found a better solution than the one I previously shared. I reached out to a company called carzdeluxe.com, and they make 3D-printed gauge pods. The owner has been amazing, and the communication has been superb!

For the setup, I’ll be using the Wunderland Racing oil pressure sensor on the cylinder head to monitor both pressure and temperature from that location. My car is down right now, but it should be running by the end of the week. I plan to have the pressure sensor installed by summer, while still relying on the unreliable Hondata to monitor everything else. If I hadn’t already paid for it, I’d definitely go a different route—but for now, I guess it’s time to embrace the situation and move on.

You can get fairly accurate oil temperature by bonding the sensor to the oil pan lower wall using thermally conductive epoxy, then covering the sensor area with insulation.
Thermally conductive epoxy is used to bond heat-sinks to computer chips for example. No leak paths with this method, but probably won't last forever.
