Considering trading in 718 GTS 4.0 for CTR

That car is beautiful, a Cayman GTS 4.0 (manual) is top on my want list. I probably won’t buy it cause I have two kids who would be upset they can’t both ride in it with me. A two seater is too much of a compromise. A 911 isn’t much better since the rear is so cramped.

throw in the dog and the car doesn’t make sense.

Sold a 911 C4S for the R. Granted I still have a 911 Gts in the stable.. if money is a factor then yeah I’d trade it in for the type R. There isn’t much anything else out there for the money that has such track prowess from the factory. I tend to buy sporty cars that can do double duty as a make shift family car since I have two younger boys although I do still have an SUV for that duty, the 911 with back seats and the type R passes with flying colors in a pinch. My wife owned a 718 Gts with the turbo before trading it in for her 911 Gts. The R definite appeases to a much younger but livelier crowd
I wouldn’t hesitate to buy the Type r again, it’s just very special to me.

There's even more nuance to this; the current gen (982) is... limited for MY 2024. The GT versions (GT4 and Spyder) are no more, production wraps in June and no further allocations are being handed out. As is the 718 T, which is basically a sporty version of the base car. Base and S cars with the 2.0 and 2.5 turbo engines respectively, and the GTS with the 4.0 naturally aspirated versions will still be produced throughout 2024- but there are pretty severe restrictions on available colors and options. My thoughts are this is due to changing production from the Zuffenhausen factory to the Osnabruck factory. Porsche said they were doing this last year "to meet demand" and in reality what that apparently translated to was this was what would allow them to keep making what is at this point a quite dated platform for another year while they caught up with the development on the electric offerings.

For all intents and purposes, you can still get a base, S, or GTS car, but it will be somewhat compromised (e.g., I hope you didn't want it in Aventurine Green or Carrara White or with carbon buckets), significantly more expensive, and no new development will be coming to the platform (so it still won't come with Android Auto or wireless CarPlay in 2024...).

Also, if rumors are to be believed, the 992.2 911 will at least have a trim level with a naturally aspirated engine. Most think it will be the same 4.0 in my car, but with possibly an electric hybrid drive. Stay tuned- that will definitely make things very interesting.

In any case, I've pretty much decided that if I can find an FL5 at MSRP, I'd most likely do it. (As would pretty much anyone, right?) That's the only way it makes even a bit of sense... although like I said I don't treat my cars as investments, and it's not that I don't think these cars are worth $60k. It's just sort of principal at this point. I got my "last of a generation" car at MSRP, I pretty much refuse to pay markup for anything else. At least in my current situation where cost is a factor but nowhere near a breaking point.

Thanks, I don’t believe it though. Porsche said they’d be at 50% EV sales by 2025, but EV sales dropped last year and are around 10%.

when Porsche sales drop 50% cause most buyers don’t want an EV, they’ll be singing a different tune.

I hope your prediction comes to fruition. Porsche has been at the forefront of developing synthetic fuels which may save the ICE after all.

Without getting into hypotheticals (I didn't qualify for the $1200 stimulus I don't think it's worth thinking about a million dollar stimulus), my car is still fetching ADMs at many dealers. I didn't pay one. It makes zero sense for me to trade it in at a loss AND pay another ADM.

If the Type R never goes for MSRP I'll never have one. Simple as that.

Not sure exactly why your mind instantly went to "sacrifice the wife's car", but that's off the table (I drive it just as much as she does anyway)

To be perfectly honest, the 95B.3 Macan GTS is the best car I've ever driven. I barely even have to qualify it with a "for what it is". Somehow Porsche turned a CUV into a sports car. It's better at being a sports sedan than an RS5, M5, Alfa Giulia Q4, etc.

Many who haven't driven one might be skeptical. I've owned 3 Macans previously and this one is exponentially better than all of them, so if you've driven a Macan before, if it's not a 2022 and up GTS, try to find one and drive it. And try to have $100k ready to buy it, because you'll very like want to...

Seriously, the car is so good it's non-negotiable. Plus it's infinitely more practical.

Mine is optioned to the teeth too, with a $108k MSRP, not including the full Xpel Stealth PPF. Yeah, not happening.

The Macan exceeding my expectations might have something to do with why I haven't completely bonded with my 718, actually...

And I know I haven't been clear- money is only kind of an issue, if that makes sense... I actually don't like my 718 as much as I thought I would. It's also my 3rd Boxster GTS; I've had a 981 and the 2.5T 718 GTS before this one. There's nothing wrong with it- it's just 3 incremental updates at substantially higher cost each sort of.... turned me off? I probably can't fully articulate it. But my whole thought process was that I could enjoy a Type R for my use case enough to justify the severe drop in price... but as I've decided that would only happen if I could get one at MSRP, which isn't likely to happen anytime soon.

If come to find out I have to come out of pocket to the tune of ~$30k extra a year to cover tuition and expenses, then I'll probably just grab an Si or Integra at MSRP and just wait 4 years before reassessing my sports car game... or maybe an FK8 Type R so I can continue to do track stuff. I'm not to that yet... but I've just reached the conclusion I don't feel like dumping $12-15k into a dealer's pockets while losing ~ $20k at the same time on yet another trade. I've talked myself off the cliff- with this thread's help!

edit- I will admit however that I've been following the Integra Type S story as it develops. That could be another angle I pursue. Probably worth its own thread, but I'm not 100% convinced that I couldn't get a Type S for MSRP. I've already established I can get a G87 M2 at MSRP without really trying, because it seems to be priced appropriately. I think Honda just undersold itself with the CTR, but the Type S might be a harder sell and not have quite the same demand. We'll see... if that's the case I may go that route.

Traded in a 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0 for the type R. Reason being was the cayman was a weekend in only toy for escaping my kids. I put 8,000 miles on it a year doing auto crosses, backroad drives and PCA events.

the type r is superior for the fact I can more regularly drive it and take the kids with my to cars and coffee events along with, enjoy it throughout the week, and take the kids with me to a nice backroad park and enjoy the drive a bit more.

we’re a 3 car family so it wasn’t impossible to keep the Porsche, but I’m kind of looking forward to consolidating cars a bit more.

the fl5 is extremely agile. My wife loves driving it much more than the Porsche. The Porsche felt MUCH more special and could handle a long drive in more comfort than the type r. The Porsche exhaust was intoxicating. But I’ll comment the lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control will likely be a big boon when I’m doing distant track events or coming back from a distant 600 mile backroad drives like I did in the Porsche.

I get more thumbs up in the type r from the everyday Honda owner vs the aloof Porsche and the snooty 911 owners in the PCA clubs. Even had the fun time of lining up with a GR Corolla on the freeway where both of us were in total shock of running into each other back in January.

if You can keep both, keep both. If it’s between spending time with the whole family vs a forever 2-seat dream car I’ll leave it to you to judge. For me I’m picking kids and compromising on the type r for where I’m at. And honestly the decision doesn’t seem like much of a compromise given how agile the type r is.
