Welp, found the skinny kid.



Like twenty years ago, I have a distinct memory of a Ford Ranger that required about four hours to extract the oil filter from. I was trying to figure out what a**hole would do such a thing, and then I remembered...

You have many stories of how you have no sense of feel, and apparently can't fathom following the other directions. I think it's just you.

Not bad advice.

Torque spec on a rubber surface isn't accurate. Gasket crush is very temperature dependent. Lubrication also matters. Twisting 3/4's of a turn is better advice.

I had some not good oil filter issues on VW's many years ago due to temperature extremes (-30 to 90 degF). Gushed Arco Graphite oil on my father-in-laws new concrete driveway, among other times.

Its less effort and struggle to use a tool.
So I like to just use a tool.

I'm sure some people like to use their anus to open a bottle cap. I use a bottle opener.

Yall have some weird hills yall would die on. You can damage an oil filter if you used a tool, you could damage an oil filter if you didnt use a tool. Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'll buy the OEM tool, as it seems to be the one people say works.

I don't want to tighten the filter by hand. It doesn't make sense. Why would I when I can use a tool?

not trying to be a smart ass (just want to be clear) - do you know how to properly use a torque wrench? i only ask because most do not. just because you can put a number in or set it to a number does not mean that you are using the tool correctly. also just because there is a tool for it doesn't mean it does a better job - that's why you would just tighten it by hand imo...

When it's a twist top, I just use my hands. Instructions are on the cap.

I'm curious what you've learned. The most common mistakes I see people do in early usage is storing it with set torque, using it like a ratchet to thread it down instead of the last few slow turns, breaking loose with it, and using crowfoots and universal sockets wrong.

If you tend to get creative, all torque values are based on an assumption of clean dry threads or lubricated. It makes a big difference, and where it's hard to guarantee that like on drain plugs, that 20-30% difference is factored into the value to ensure you don't strip it.

Technically you should recalibrate it every few years.... But I don't know anybody that does for home use.

I can calibrate them at my work. We have a cal lab. I have one my uncle passed along, it's still accurate. We have tiny ones that are very expensive too that we use for smaller more accurate stuff.

Nice. I can't use the cal lab at my work, all metrology instruments are serialized and logged.
