Red Hot 2023 Honda Civic Type R Conquers “Green Hell” Nürburgring with New Front-Wheel Drive Track Record
April 19, 2023
  • Civic Type R now holds lap records at two legendary racetracks, Suzuka and Nürburgring Nordschleife
  • The pinnacle of Honda factory performance, the new Civic Type R is the fastest, most powerful Honda vehicle ever offered in the U.S.
  • In-car video documents the record-setting lap
The all-new 2023 Honda Civic Type R, the most powerful Honda production vehicle ever sold in the U.S.,has set a new track record for a front-wheel drive car1 around the iconic 20.8-kilometer Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany—considered the most challenging road circuit ever devised—during testing and performance evaluation. The officially measured new lap record time of 7 minutes 44.881 seconds2 further demonstrates the improved dynamic performance of the new, more powerful Civic Type R compared to.

For the record-setting lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the Civic Type R was fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect tires jointly developed with Michelin using know-how amassed through the development of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S, which is the standard tire on the turbocharged hot hatch. Available through Honda dealers, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect tires further enhance the circuit performance of the vehicle, improving dry grip and Type R's well-balanced handling.

"To our Civic Type R fans all over the world:

Under the concept of 'Ultimate SPORT 2.0,' we developed the all-new Civic Type R with the spirit of 'going beyond our past achievements' and strived for the ultimate FWD sports car by refining the 'essential value' and 'emotional appeal' unique only to our Type R models.

Since the start of sales in Japan in September 2022, we have received numerous customer feedback from all around the world filled with amazement and joy, far exceeding our expectations. However, we still had one more mission to fulfill, which was to claim the title as the world's fastest FWD car with a record Nürburgring lap time.

Six years after the lap record was set by the previous-generation Civic Type R (FK8), we reached this new dimension as a result of all of the passions we poured in and all the advancements we made for this Type R model. Finally, our wish to share this title with all Type R fans all around the world came true.

We sincerely hope that all current and prospective owners of the Type R will enjoy and love their vehicle with the pride we share with you."

2 An official Nürburgring Nordschleife lap measurement. The lap time was measured based on the official rules instituted in 2019, with a full lap of the Nordschleife, which is 20.832 km long. Before 2019, lap times were measured with the lap length of 20.600 km and were not officially certified by the Nürburgring.

Insane effort by the driver. He almost lost control at the 4.20min mark pushing so hard! I figured it would have beat the Megan Trophy R by more of a gap, but the time is very impressive considering the Civic has no weight reduction.

That was pretty sweet to watch. I’ve raced that track so many times in Forza and Gran Turismo. I know every turn n the track.

What's interesting is they don't appear to of modified the car much beyond what you can get from the factory. Cup 2 Connects and not Cup 2R or something, looks like the factory wheels and not the optional forged, no cage at least seen for the A pillar, kept infotainment (though video speed appears to be from the GPS puck and not the car speedo) instead of removing it for weight reduction, can't see any obvious weight reduction methods or other kinda grey area cheating that all manufacturers have done in the past.

Great driving and hope people notice how few times the driver hit the shift warning buzzer and how little time he spent in it. Can't quite make it out but it actually appears like the the car is indicating it's in R+ mode? They had to of done something with the dampers if they did as I would of expected a much worse ride if it is.

I’ve tried to do the math but I suck at it. The FK8 finished in 7:43.8 while the FL5 did so in a longer 7:44.881. However, the track was recently lengthened from 20.6 km to 20.832 km on.

My (bad) math says this is a 1.13% increase. In minutes, the FK8 finished the course in 436.8 mins while the FL5 finished in 464.881. If we apply a 1.13% improvement to the FK8’s time, that *seems* to be a reduction of 4.396 seconds, 7:40:485.

Someone better than I am at math wanna take this?

I’m old enough to remember when people on this very forum told us it wouldn’t be able to beat the FK8’s time, let alone the Megane’s. Haha

EDIT: Though I was unaware the track length was recently increased (see above post). That does open up a whole can of worms. Because the Renault and FK8 numbers are technically shorter. Not quite apples to apples.

Nice! However, they should not have increased the track length, should have just stuck with convention. It's just going to get confusing now with the lap times.

It’s not at all a barrier to comparing the two. The math is simple. I’m just not smart enough to do simple math. : )

The full lap is 232m longer. The megane, for instance, lapped in 7:45.4 the full lap and 7:40.1 the slightly shorter configuration. Considering this 5s difference, the fk8 should have a lap time close to 7:49.

Quick maff: average speed was 44.81m/s. It would take 459.72 seconds = 7:39.72 to traverse 20.6 km at that speed.

This math appears to be correct and makes the FL5 time all the more impressive. The delta between the FL5 time and that of the FK8 is material and not as close as it may seem at first blush.
