The biggest slap in the face is a $44k price tag (with destination) in the midst of a rallying dollar! WTF?

Seriously. It’s at a 20 year high, having destroyed nearly all foreign currencies (including the Yen). With how strong the USD is, you’d imagine the new Type R would be similarity priced as the last one.

The talk of inflation has little relevance in this context because it’s a foreign product at the end of the day. Since exchange rates favor the dollar, compared to the euro or anything else, this should translate to significant savings, but doesn’t. For example, the Canadian dollar got rekt vs USD, and yet the car costs significantly less there. This makes no sense.

Now, the dollar isn’t going to stay this strong forever. As a matter of fact, it looks topped out and due for a major pullback. And pull back it will, soon. Likely this year, too, which means the CTR will only get more expensive.

This is nuts.

BMW M2 for Sale Right Now in Babylon, NY - Autotrader
These guys have been talking about buying an M2 for Type R money for a long time, and I keep wonder where they see these deals.

5m JPY to 43k USD is roughly 116:1, which is pretty much where the exchange rate was right before the Fire Nation attacked, and that rate held through most of 2021. Given that Honda probably made all the contracts (procurement, logistics, etc.) for the FL5 at or near that rate, it's perfectly reasonable that MSRP would follow suit.

FL5 is a finished product, after all, not a raw material. Do you expect its retail price to be just as volatile? Would you be complaining if, for some crazy reason, the exchange rate inverts and we're looking at 80:1 like back in 2012? How does 56k USD MSRP sound to you?

Except that production started relatively recently and they surely came up with the price as the dollar was soaring. The exchange rate won't invert anytime soon because at more than 145 yen per dollar, it collapsed to a 24-year low. This year alone JPY has lost 1/5th of its value against the dollar.

The price of the CTR is surprising because Toyota, Honda, and really the majority of Japan's auto industry is only moving more and more production overseas. And it still doesn't explain this:

CTR Canada = $50,050 = $36,819.53 USD
CTR USA = $42,895 USD

Idk man, there a billion factors at play when it comes to pricing anything anywhere. If you're really mad about it, write Honda a letter and ask them why. I'm sure their explanation will be just as unsatisfying as mine or anyone else's.

At the end of the day, you'll either buy the car or you won't. And (genuinely) best of luck to you trying to get anywhere close to MSRP, bullshit options included or not.

“really mad about it”? - lol what?

I never asked for a ”satisfying” explanation on why the price is high. Only why it’s high, given the circumstances outlined and the comparisons made to pricing in other markets like Canada. Frankly, it’s illogical and yes, it will turn many potential buyers away.

I mean, at this point, I feel that it’s targeting a middle to high income base that’s probably not so keen to drop $50-60k on a Civic. Thats not to say that it won’t sell (or sell out) because I’m sure that it will.

Like you said, I’ll either buy the car or I won’t. Chances are that I will because the price increase is still in line with what I’m willing to pay. That doesn’t mean its price isn’t ridiculous or that I’m dying to pay more for it (be it at MSRP or with markup).

US car prices have been crazy lately, not sure why. I'm in Canada and we were also shopping around for Toyota. For example the Highlander XSE is 43,500 in US and it's a lot less in Canada. No way in hell I'd be buying that suv for that price, it'd be like 59k CAD lol.

Not sure why... But ya Highlander XSE is 50,500 in Canada.

This article is a decent read.

The way I see it, people just need to stop buying. Seems like in USA, as long as people keep buying they will keep charging more and even adding mark ups. Maybe in Canada the government does a better job at controlling prices, while in the States it's just a free for all?

At least worth a consideration for those with a garage. No ADM and allocation within weeks.

That's expensive :p 82k in canada for a model 3. Wow so overpriced. I wonder if that has the same crappy interior as 2019 model.
